Diego, and later assigned to VP 91 where he flew as second ra dioman in PBY’s. You who have carried the burden of training have acquitted yourself well. You who are now returning from combat known from first hand experience that the Jap is fanatically courageous, deter mined and wily foe, who will take full advantage of any let down on our part. Upon all of you, as instructors, lies the re sponsibility for the continuing high quality of the pilots and aircrewmen who must carry on the long tough fight ahead.” Adm. Mitscher Praises In a report on operations against Tokyo and I wo Jima during February and March, Vice Admiral Marc A. Mitscher, then Commander Task Force 58, declared: “The performance of pilots during these operations— in view of their inexperience, the nature of the targets, and the foul weather encountered—is considered to be of the highest order. Too much credit cannot be given to the Naval Aviation Training Organization and its methods.” ‘Well Done' from CNAT Adding his “well done” to all hands in the Naval Air Training Command, Rear Admiral C. A. Pownall, Chief of Naval Air Training, pointed out that “a long struggle still remains in the war against Japan, and there fore, our efforts must continue to the making of not only good but the very best combat Naval pilots, aircrewmen, and Naval enlisted aviation ratings, that it is within our capabilities to ac complish.” CNAPT Congratulates Commenting on these laudatory messages, Read Admiral O. B. Hardison, Chief of Naval Air Primary Training, “proudly con gratulates all hands serving within the NAPTC for having COMING EVENTS TONIGHT SPORTS Finals of the Regimental Sports Pro gram. Plane Forced Down On one of the shuttle trips be tween Canton Island and Auk- land, the plane developed prop trouble and was forced to make an emergency landing at sea. stroy An emergency radio mes sage was sent out, and after two and a half days of floating about aimlessly, a destroyer sighted them and brought the necessary repair parts. Corbell made the repairs on the faulty propeller, and the plane returned safely to base. In the Spring on ’43, Corbell was sent to Calcutta, India where he was assigned for a short while to the Chinese Na tional Airways who had a con tract with NATS. Meets Mme. Chiang Kai-shek While flying the Calcutta- Chungking run , Corbell met Mme. Chiang Kai-shek for whom he has a great deal of respect. It was at this time that she signed his short snorter bill, which bears the signatures of several other important people including J. T. Tripp, president of PanAir. Corbell flew “over the hump” of the Himalayas several times during his stay | with CNAC. In the Fall of 1943, Corbell wa.s shifted to Espiritu Santo where he was assigned to VB 104 as a plane captain of a PB4Y making short bombing runs over the Munda and Vella Lavella area. On one bombing mission, the plane was attacked by several Jap Kates and one of the gun ners was killed in the fight. When Corbell returned to the United States in March, 1944, he had over 2000 flight hours to his credit, most of which were made over water. Radioman from VP 91 Now a member of the 70th Battalion, Cadet Robert Butter- case was formerly an Aviation Radioman with VP 91, seeing action in the Rabaul area. Finishing ARM school at Jack sonville in October of 1942, But- tercase was sent to OTU at San quadron was used ex clusively for DUMBO work in rescuing fliers who had been forced down over water. Rescue Marine Flier From February, 1944 until September of the same year, Buttercase was doing rescue work over Rabaul, Green Island, and the Treasuries. While in the vicinity of the St. George channel, the plane in which he was flying was called to rescue a Marine flier who was forced down in the water within range of an enemy shore battery. Landing and taxiing in under enemy fire, the DUMBO plane took the Marine aviator aboard and made a take-off before the enemy could concentrate fire on the plane. In Pacific Landings Among the 11-week refreshers who have gone a long way since leaving Pre-Flight training last year is Robert W. Mitchell, of Tuscon, Ariz. Mitchell, who entered the Navy in January, 1941, left St. Mary’s Pre-Flight School in August of last year. After train ing at the Oceanside amphibious base, he went into the Pacific with a JASCO (Joint Assault Signal Company), and partici pated in landings at New Guinea, Leyte, and Luzon. Orders send ing him back into the V-5 pro gram reached him in Manila early in May. Before originally entering the naval aviation program, he served as SM2c aboard the USS Grant, making runs be tween Dutch Harbor and Seattle. 1? '1 hear it's a lousy movie"
