Page Four CLOUDBUSTER—SPORTS Friday, August 3, 1945 Cloudbusters End Season With Two Wins During Week The Cloudbusters finished their season in strong fashion here last Wednesday with an easy 9-0 vic tory over the Maxton Air Base nine. It was their second win of the week, the other victim being Erwin Auditorium of Durham which dropped a 6-4 decision to Pre-Flight on Sunday. Ken Olson’s pitching and bat ting were important factors in the 9-0 triumph over Maxton. The lanky right hander had a perfect day at the plate with a homer, two singles, and a jvalk, and held the soldiers to six scat tered hits in the eight innings he pitched. The homer was his third round-tripper in the last two games. Shortstop Hughes also had a big day at the plate with three safeties in four attempts, while Bob Warren contributed a home run and a single. Charlie Hayne was the winning hurler against Erwin Auditorium on Sunday, although the big bat of Olson was again prominent in the victory. With the score tied at three-all in the sixth, Olson hit for the circuit to put the ’Busters ahead and added another four-bagger in the eighth for good measure. -Officers- (Continued from Page 1) in a manner which will place you on an equal footing with USN officers of about the same age and of the same length of service in rank. “A professional naval educa tion which will be the best in the world. “An equal opportunity in pro motions and assignments.” “These are the objectives which we have set ourselves,” he said, “and T for one am de termined that the detailed plan, when it is completed, shall em body them. Young Officers Wanted “Th^ Navy wants young offi cers, particularly young line of ficers with experience at sea. Fortunately, the younger an offi cer is, the more the Navy has to offer him in terms of comparable pay, promotion and, eventually, retirement benefits. “Transfers will be subject to standards of age, past perform ance, physical fitness, rank, etc. . . But the most important ijualification of all is the will to ierve. Peace without power is m empty dream. The United States Navy will be one of the ?reat elements of the power vhich insures the peace of the vorld—and the freedom of our iwn nation. The officers and men vho volunteer to serve in the STavy after the war, therefore, lave a high mission to which iny American can dedicate his ife with honor and satisfaction.” RECORD BREAKERS—Three of the four members of the 69th Battalion’s fleet medley relay team which set a new mark of 3:49.2 at the last Sports Program finals are, left to right, Tom Codding- ton, Milwaukee, Wis., Vernon L. McCloskey, Seattle, Wash., and Mark Burnham, Schelburne, Mass. The old record of 3:51.5 was set by runners of the 51st Battalion. Fourth member of the team, not present for the picture, is Clarence Mabry, from Texas. Navy Has Landed Troops 150 Times in Pacific The U. S. Navy has put troops ashore more than 150 times in the Pacific, beginning with the assault on Japanese positions in the southern Solomons. This is an average rate of more than one landing a week since Aug. 7, 1942, when the tide of Japanese expansion was halted at Guadalcanal. Some landings have been against little or no opposition, others have been made in the face of fierce resistance—but all. with the exception of a very few where preliminary reconnais sance revealed no enemy troops, had to be planned anticipating opposition. G. Crisp, USN, Director of the Di vision of Shore Establishments and Civilian Personnel.
