HERE are two new graduates of Gastonia High School who are
also members of Firestone Textiles families. Harold Davis, varsity
football player and student leader, is the son of Men’s Club Clerk
Ben Davis. His classmate is Ruth Faye Haynes, daughter of J. 0.
Haynes, speeder tender. Ruth’s scholastic average was high enough
to place her in the National Honor Society; whereas, Harold’s foot
ball prowess won for him a college athletic scholarship. The object
being admired above is, of course, a Gastonia High School Diploma.

bonds, according to information re
ceived from Kenneth C. Wible,
Deputy Director for North Caro
lina for the U. S. Savings Bond
Division of the Treasury Depart
ment.
Percentage figures show that 68
per cent of plant employees parti
cipated in the Purchase of Series
E. Savings Bonds, buying a total
of $347,193.75 in such bonds, or
nearly one half of all bonds pur
chased during the year in Gaston
County through the Payroll Sav
ings Plan.

DR. CLYDE A. ERWIN, state
superintendent of Public Instruc-
taoji, as main speaker of the
morning, paid tribute to the rapid
development of the Vocational Tex
tile School, due to the interest of
textile men of this area, pointing
out that this school is the only one
of its kind, and is setting a pattern
as to what can be done in other
fields of vocational training.
Dr. Erwin, speaking to the grad
uates, commended them for their
industry, working daily at regular
jobs and in addition attending the
vocational school to better fit
themselves for advancement, and
to aid the continuing progress of
the textile industry.
