I Monday, September 15— Book Exchange opens at ' Girls’ Club New Use For Tires AMERICAN ejigineering skill, plus 18 Firestone heavy-duty tires, has made an easy task out of the toughest pipe-laying jobs ever encountered. Recently the Transcontinental Gas Pipeline Corporation, which delivers natural gas fi'om Texas to New York City through a 1,840-mile pipeline, added a new section from Staten Island to Brooklyn. To lower (5,514 feet of concrete-encased steel pipe, weighing 588 po'unds a foot, across The Narrows of New York Harbor, the Collins Construction Co., of Houston, Texas, developed an ingenius pipe launcher. This pipe launcher uses 14-pIy, 10.00 x 15 Firestone heavy-duty truck tires in a series of units of three each, as pictured above. Purpose of the pi])e launcher was to get the heavy 24-inch pipe into the water without cracking the cement casing. The tires had to withstand a tremendous load as they rolled- 235-ton sections of pipe from railroad flatcars onto the pipe launcher and into the water. .... For Bullet Sealing Cells SiiiHillp THE fabric for bullet-sealing fuel cells, shown above, was woven at Firestone Textiles in Gastonia. The cells, which saved airmen’s lives and airplanes during World War II and the Korean War, now have been successfully adapted to ground and amphibious vehicles by the Firestone Tire and Rubber Company. The new Army Otter, am phibian cargo tractor, here is being equipped with the Firestone safety cells on a Pontiac assembly line at Lansing, Michigan. Replac ing metal fuel cells, the twin rubber gasoline cells provide a double safety factor in that bullet holes seal themselves immediately and the rubber, unlike metal, absorbs jolts, jars and twisting stresses and strains without breaking open at the seams.
