SECOND SHIFT BILLIARDS
Spot Game In Yard
CALLIE MOORE, Refreshment
clerk, is still excited about a large
(14 pound) coon his dogs treed in
his front yard at 810 South Vance
Street. Not only he, but a large
number of neighbors saw a spec
tacular battle between dogs and
coon that continued for hours on
a recent, otherwise quiet, Sunday
It seems that this was an un
usually ferocious coon; and the
scrap it precipitated nearly cost
the hounds their lives, although—
with some help from their master
—they finally emerged victorious.
P. S. Mr. Moore ate the coon.
TWINS Glenna and Gladys Hamrick, left to right, gaze
at their basketball, crystal-gazer fashion, at the Gastonia
Armory, which in season is converted into a basketball court. The
identical twins are forwards on the Firestone Girls Basketball team
and are rated among the best in their league as the time approaches
for scheduled competition in the Gaston County Girls Basketball
League. The Hamrick twins, who are now seniors at GHS, plan to
enter Elon College next fall where they plan to major in physical
Income Tax Reduction In Effect
BEGINNING with all wages and
salaries paid after January 1, 1954,
the Company will withhold less
Federal Income Tax. Reason for
this is that the increased rates
which were set up at the outbreak
of the Korean War in 1951 remain
in effect only until the end of 1953.
This means that the employee’s
deduction for income tax will be
reduced about 10 per cent because
withholding will be at the rate of
18 per cent after exemptions in
stead of at the 20 per cent rate
which applied during 1953.
Unless Congress decides to post
pone the scheduled increase in the
Social Security tax rate. Social
Security taxes will be higher in
1954, for the employee and for the
Company, which matches the em
ployee’s tax. The rate will increase
from 11/2 per cent to 2 per cent
on the first $3,600 paid. This will
mean an additional deduction of
$18 per year for all who receive
$3,600 or more.
There is a similar increase in
the matching rate paid by the
Company which will in 1954 pay 2
per cent of the employee’s wages
as its portion of the Social Securi
