KENNETH POWERS, 21- years-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Paul Powers (Weaving), was killed in a train-truck collision in East Gastonia on May 20. Mr. Powers is shown here as a mem ber of the Marine Corps from which he had been recently dis charged after three years’ ser vice. At the time of his death he was employed as a driver-de- liverer for a dairy company. In addition to his parents, he is survived by his wife, the former Patricia Street; an eight-month- old son; and two borthers, Paul Powers, Jr., and Bill Powers. Sympathy is extended to George Williams, opener tender, in the death of his brother, Sam Williams, who died suddenly April 11, 1954. Mrs. Fannie Revels, mother of Benchman Walter Revels, died in Chester, S. C., April 28. Funeral services were held at the West Side Baptist Church with burial in Evergreen Cemetery, Chester, S.C. Karl To Receive Honorary Degree From New Bedford Institute Of Textiles WILLIAM A. KARL of Akron, Ohio, President of Firestone Textiles, division of The Firestone Tire & Rubber Company, will receive an honorary Master of Science degree form the New Bedford Institute of Textiles and Technology, New Bedford, Massachusetts, and also will give the commencement address at the Institute’s graduation exercises on June 4.' Mr, Karl’s honorary degree will be one of six presented, the first ones to be given in the history of the Institute. Born in New Bedford on Sep tember 22, 1898, Mr. Karl attend ed New Bedford High School. He then entered the New Bedford Tex tile Institute and upon graduation in 1919 received the bronze medal of the National Association of Cot ton Manufacturers, an award for highest excellence. He was first employed at the Butler Mill in New Bedford and joined the Firestone Company in its Akron Textile Laboratory in December, 1919. In 1927 he joined the Purchasing Department in con nection with the purchase of tex tiles and the operation of Company textile plants. IN 1937 he was placed in charge of the textile operations and was elected President of Firestone Tex tiles in 1940. In this position he heads the operation of five plants located in Gastonia, North Caro lina; Bennettsville, South Carolina; Woodstock, Ontario, Canada; Sao Paulo, Brazil, and Buenos Aires, Argentina. Mr. Karl has been a member of the New York Cotton Exchange since 1940. Last fall he was named to the Board of Trustees of the Textile Research Institute, a nonprofit or ganization with headquarters at Princeton, New Jersey. The Insti tute is composed of textile mills, suppliers and research organiza tions for the purpose of conducting long-range research for the benefit of the textile industry. Mr. Karl also is a member of the National Council of the Young Voice Of Firestone Goes Off NBC June 7 THE Firestone Tire & Rubber Company has announced that the “Voice of Firestone” radio and tel evision program which has been broadcast at 8:30 on Monday even ings for the past 25 years on radio and the past five years on a simul cast on television will not be heard on the NBC network after the June 7th broadcast. Company officials expressed re gret that this announcement be comes necessary arising from the fact that the National Broadcast ing Company has advised that the 8:30 period on Monday night will not be available throughout the year and that no other evening television network time will be offered to Firestone for continuing its long-established program for the benefit of its loyal listening audience. Future plans for Firestone radio and television programs will be announced at a later date, Com pany officials said.
