Sm w During the year the Company continued to call nationwide at tention TO the necessity for building better and safer highways AND FOR properly MAINTAINING OUR PRESENT HIGHWAY SYSTEM. PICTURED HERE ARE TWO OF A SERIES OF FIVE NATIONAL ADVERTISEMENTS SPONSORED BY Firestone. In the summer of 1953 our Company announced the development of a new, lov^^-cost synthetic latex compound different from any other rubber used in asphalt roads up to that time. During the last year sales of this latex compound were made to eight state highway departments for use in test sections of roads. Several other states have indicated they will make test installations with the compound during the 1955 construction season. This new type of rubberized pavement should be more resistant to frost damage and, since it is less brittle, it will not break up under traffic stress as rapidly as ordinary asphalt. For the thirty-first consecutive time, Firestone tires were on the cars which won the Indianapolis 500-mile Sweepstakes and for the twenty-sixth consecutive time on the car which won the Pikes Peak Climb. FOR DEFENSE, we continued to manufacture recoilless rifles, tank cannon, antiaircraft guns and mounts, tank tracks, road wheels, bogie rollers, gas masks, fuel cells, stainless steel parts for jet engines and tanks, and tires and other products for tanks, aircraft and military vehicles. We continued to operate for the Government the arsenal at Ravenna, Ohio, and we were awarded the contract to manage the Ordnance plants at Meadville, Pennsylvania, and Sandusky, Ohio. Artillery shell production was acceler ated at our New Bedford, Massachusetts, factory and delivery of guided missiles from our Los Angeles plant reached a new high volume. Our Defense Research Division perfected a new 106-mm. recoilless rifle and ammunition for this weapon, which were tested and adopted by the armed forces. It is now working on other classified defense projects. Our distribution is essentially through independent tire dealers and our dealer franchise is recognized as an exceptional opportunity to build a permanent and profitable business. Our Firestone Stores had another suc cessful year and continued to serve as valuable laboratories for testing merchandising plans before they are offered to our dealers. Your Board of Directors has adopted resolutions recommending to holders of Common Stock of the Company that its Articles of Incorporation be amended to provide that the authorized number of shares of its Common Stock be changed from 7,000,000 with a par value of $12.50 per share to 12,000,000 with a par value of $6.25 per share, and to provide for a stock Distribution is essentially through independent tire dealers and THE Firestone franchise is recognized as an exceptional opportunity TO BUILD A permanent AND PROFITABLE BUSINESS. This proposed amendment has been submitted to holders of Common Stock of the Company at today’s meeting and, if approved, distribution of certificates representing the additional shares will be made on January 31, 1955, to stockholders of record on January 25, 1955. It is expected that this action will result in expanding the market for the stock, giving it wider public ownership. WE EXTEND to the men and women of Firestone in our factories, offices, stores, warehouses, branches and plantations throughout the world our appreciation for their co-operation and the quality of their workman ship. Their skill, experience and loyalty are among the greatest assets of our organization. The continuous service records of employees in our Akron plants, for example, reveal that 31 per cent of our factory and office em ployees have been with the Company twenty years or more. More than 81 per cent of our entire working force in Akron plants have continuous service records of five years or more. Our Military Service Bureau is in contact with 1,420 Firestone em ployees who are on leave of absence while serving our country in the armed forces, and we sent each one of them a gift box at Christmas time. For the eighth time in the last nine years, the National Safety Council presented to our Company its Distinguished Service to Safety Award, the highest honor given by the Council for industrial safety. Also during the year we set a new world record in industrial safety for the rubber industry. Last January 28th, our Memphis tire plant employees set a world record of 7,721,421 man-hours worked without a single lost-time accident. Many special awards and honors were given to our plants during the year for the safety records they established. A TOTAL OF 50,158 men and women of Firestone and 110,229 depend ents now are protected by our employees’ group insurance plan which for the year paid out $1,084,550 in death benefits and $4,535,941 in disability and hospitalization.
