Miss Ruby Givens, daughter of Ernest Givens, shop painter, spent the week of July 25 at Caswell Baptist Assembly, Southport, N. C., as a G, A. Queen Regent. Miss Jane Francum, daughter of Mrs. Rosie Francum, spent the week of July 21 at Ridgecrest Baptist Assembly attending the pro gram of Training Union Leadership Week. James E. Givens, son of Ernest Givens, painter, spent the week of July 25 at Fruitland Baptist Assembly as a Royal Ambassador Page. Mrs. Lillian Parham, inspector, has been on vacation for a week. Mrs. Bonnie Ledford, inspector, and family visited her sister in Cleveland, Ohio, during vacation. Mr. and Mrs. Fred Queen and son of Candler, N. C., were guests of Mrs. Louella Queen, inspector, and her husband recently. That’s because he’s spending this summer in valuable practical experience as assistant to Dr. Fi'ank Malone, pastor at Loray Baptist Church. Hodges, 23, and the oldest of five children, would like to do additional graduate study beyond the bachelor of divinity degree which he is earning at the Louisville seminary. “My chief aim in life,” he says, “is ‘one to teach and preach God’s Word, making Christ known to men.’ ” He prefers a teaching-preaching combina tion “because it is hard to separate the two,” he explains. AS ASSISTANT to the pastor at Loray, Hodges helps with the activities of the young people’s organizations, fills the pulpit when Dr. Malone is away, and assists in the regular visitation program of the church. During his high school days, Hodges participat ed in youth meetings in his hometown of Florence, S. C. He attended North Greenville Junior College, Tigerville, S. C., and was graduated from Furman University, Greenville, with a B. A. degree in 1954. During his college days in South Carolina he preach ed wherever he was needed, and on vacation from school helped student teams with evangelistic meet ings. In the summer of 1953 he assisted the pastior IN THE CHURCH LIBRARY, Ruford Hodg es, Jr., makes preparation for a Sunday evening service at Loray Baptist Church. of Southside Baptist Church, Florence and last summer served as interim minister for the same congregation. Hodges, who is living at the Firestone Dormi tory, will remain here through August 28. several days at their cabin on the river along with Mr. and Mrs. Charles Black. Mrs. Black is the daughter of Mrs. Louella Queen. Mrs. Opal Lunsford, insjiector, is out from work due to illness. Mrs. Louella Queen, inspector, spent a week of vacation visiting her brother, C. A. Isham in West Point, Ga., and cousins, Mr. and Mrs. Earnest Horne in Lanett, Ala. Mrs. Queen also visited Robin Lake Beach and the Ida Cason Callaway gardens near Chipley, Ga. Hazel Patterson spent several days of her recent vacation at Carolina Beach near Wilmington. Winder Tender Mae Grindle and her husband,Arnold Grindle, yarn packer, spent their vacation at Myrtle Beach, S. C. Kitty Hovis, winder tender, underwent a major operation at Mercy Hospital in Charlotte recently. Faye Oakes, winder tender, has entered Gaston Memorial Hospital for treatment. Howard Burgess, overhauler, and his family spent a recent week at Daytona Beach, Fla. They visited several other places of interest in that state. In Service Dariel Walker, son of Roller Shop Foreman Paul Walker and Mrs. Walker, received his dis charge from the Air Force at Kil mer Air Base, N. J., recently. Sgt. Walker has spent the past three years in France. Seaman First Class James Bud dy Green, son of Mrs. Lillian Green, respooler, recently spent a two- week furlough at home in Gastonia. He had just completed a ten- months tour of duty in Japan and the Pacific. While on leave here. Seaman Green and his family visit ed friends and relatives in Western North Carolina. Deal - Austin Miss Patricia Ann Austin and Clarence Ray Deal exchanged mar riage vows Friday, July 22, at 8 p. m,, in West Franklin Avenue Baptist Church, Gastonia. Mrs, Deal is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Hubert Ralph Austin. She is a 1955 graduate of Ashley High School. Mr. Deal, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Earl Deal, attended the local high school.
