for his sophomore year at Duke University—and
somewhat the wiser. The 1954 Firestone College
Scholarship winner from Gastonia gained some
practical experience in industry and in human
relations this summer while employed in the
SYC Weaving Department during the school
vacation.
Carl performed a number of tasks on his first-
shift job here, including hauling materials and
filling batteries on the looms.
ON THE JOB, Carl—who is preparing to enter
some field of humanitarian work—learned first
hand some of the wisdom that the ancient art
of weaving affords. For example, a loom can
teach one a lot about strong threads in the fabric
of life. And the shuttle, with its speed and
accuracy, can drive home the truth that himian
life is a fleeting thing and that one is wise when
he makes the best of his years.
The student is the son of Carl Stewart, Sr.,
of the Weaving Department, and Mrs. Stewart,
Ply Twisting. He was the second member of a
Firestone Textiles employee family to be award
ed the four-year scholarship since the Company
began the Awards program in 1953. In 1954 there
were 20 sons and daughters of Company em
ployees who were honored with scholarships.
Winners may attend any college or university
in the United States providing it is an accredited
institution.
