PAGE 6 MAY, 1956 Scholarships Are Awarded To 29 In 12 States The awards of full college scholarships to children of employees of the Com pany has been announced for 1956. A story of the two winners from Firestone Textiles families appears on page 5. Sixteen boys and 13 girls were selected for Firestone awards this year. Scholar ships were allocated to various sections of the country on the basis of Firestone employment in those sections. EIGHT WINNERS are from Ohio, four in California, three each in North Caro lina and Tennessee, two each in Indiana, Iowa, and Pennsylvania, and one each from Illinois, Kansas, Massachusetts, Michigan and New York. Applicants this year totaled 279. All were carefully reviewed by an impartial group of judges in selecting the winners. FIFTEEN annual awards were planned when the program began in 1953. This year, it was decided to award 29 in order to bring to 80 the number of students enrolled next September. Of this year’s winners, 13 plan to study in the fields of engineering or science. Ten will prepare for teaching careers and two for the nursing profession. One each will prepare to be a minister, lawyer, commercial artist, and case worker in psychiatry.
