Firestone People Had A Look
At The Textile ‘Big Show’
‘God has provided
better for us
than we supposed’
This copy of a letter from
Edward Winslow of the first
Pilgrim community in
America, to a friend in Eng
land, is among the oldest
records referring to circum
stances surrounding the first
Thanksgiving observance in
the New World. Winslow
was one of the founders and
an administrator of the Ply
mouth (or Plimoth) Colony.
The Pilgrims’ recognition of
Providential Care in 1621 is
a precious and lasting ex
ample for Americans today,
to “give God Thanks, Who
hath so Favorably dealt with
us.” (A “Heritage Landmark”
feature on the first Pilgrim
Community in America is on
page 3.)
A few dozen men of Firestone
Textiles supervision had a look
at one of the greatest shows in
American industry, when they
attended the 21st Southern Tex
tile Exposition in Greenville,
S. C. The five-day program went
into history in October, leaving

The biennial exposition af
fords the country's most elabo
rate display of the newest tech
nological developments and re
finements in textile machinery,
equipment and related supplies.
This year’s show had more of
a carnival atmosphere than ever
—with anything from entertain
ment, refreshments and sou
venirs, to the most modern and
finest in textile machinery, al
lied products and equipment.
Wares on display ranged from
hand soap and wax crayons to
automation-age machines, in
cluding a shuttleless loom—first
real major advance in textiles
since man started weaving fab
rics centuries ago.
There was glitter - glamor
everywhere in the more than
150,000 square feet of show
space at Textile Hall. But there
was always a serious note, when
mill men looked close and hard
at the machines, concerned with
how technological developments
could improve the textile in
dustry, and keep it healthy in
the industrial race.
While Greenville is the center
of an area having the nation’s
greatest concentration of textile
mills, the industry is actually
scattered over 44 states.

‘Speak to Me
of Giving..
Kahlil Gibran in “The
Prophet” answers:
It is when you give of
yourself that you truly give.
There are those who have
little and give it all. These
are the believers in life and
the bounty of life; their cof
fer is never empty.
There are those who give
with joy, and that joy is
their reward.
And there are those who
give with pain, and that pain
is their baptism.
And there are those who
give and know not pain in
giving, nor do they seek joy,
nor give with mindfulness
of virtue; they give as in
yonder valley the myrtle
breathes its fragrance into
space.
Through the hands of such
as these God speaks, and
from behind Iheir eyes He
smiles upon the earth.
