SIGHTSEEING
FROM
CAMP
FIRESTONE
☆ ☆
Many Firestone employee families
have discovered a wonderland of
sightseeing and outdoor recreation
in a vast mountain domain within a
inO-milp raHiijc of Hamp FiToetnrtp
on Lake James, near Marion. A
"sample" beauty spot in the area is
Pearson's Falls near the all-year re
sort town of Tryon in the Blue
Ridge foothills. The Glen surround
ing the falls is a botannical sanctu
ary open to visitors all seasons.
• TWEETSIE RAILROAD between Blowing Rock and Boone is an
other sightseeing attraction less than an hour's drive from Camp
Firestone. The famous steam-driven narrow gauge and her sister
"iron horse", the Yukon Queen, will take you on a nostalgic trip
to Yesteryear. On your visit you will see an extensive restoration
of a village of 75 years ago, built around the Depot. Tweetsie huffs
and puffs daily June-August, weekends in September and October.

Polybutadiene
Facility Set
For Brazil
The Firestone company will
build a polybutadiene rubber
factory at Recife, Brazil—the
first of its kind in South Amer
ica. The facility will have an
annual capacity of 27,500 metric
tons 2,205 pounds) of polybuta
diene, a synthetic which actual
ly is superior to natural rubber
in some respects.
Construction, to begin this
fall, is expected to be completed
in about two years. The Recife
plant is sponsored by a Brazil
ian government agency created
to promote industrial develop
ment in the northeastern part of
the country.
This will be the third plant in
which Firestone will manufac
ture polybutadiene. One at
Orange, Texas, began producing
last spring with an annual capa
city of 30,000 long tons (2,240
pounds); and production is
planned to begin at a new plant
at Port Jerome, France late this
year.
AT RECIFE, alcohol will be
derived from sugar cane as the

UF Seeks $184,105
In Short Campaign
The Greater Gastonia United Fund this year will seek a
goal of $184,105.25, in less time than ever before. Campaign
chairman Frank Matthews has announced that the fund
raising drive will be from October 17 to November 3—a little
less than three weeks. The new goal, representing the pro
posed budget for the coming year, is increased some $5,000
over last year’s figure of $179,000.

tadiene rubber. The plant is lo
cated in a vast sugar-cane area
which has plentiful supply of al
cohol.
Total budget of $158,830 will
be channeled to the 24 partici
pating agencies in the Greater
Gastonia United Fund. Office
and campaign expenses will
total $17,000, and $8,000 will be
allowed to take care of “shrink
age.”
Firestone has been operating
in Brazil since opening its tire
plant near Sao Paulo in 1939.
Facilities for production of tex
tiles and foam rubber have
since been added to the plant.
In 1956 the company established
a 22,000-acre rubber plantation
near Itubera in the eastern part
of Brazil.
The Lummus Company of
New York will build the Recife
plant. Lummus also is building
f a 0 i 1 i t i e s at Bareilly. India,
which will be operated by Fire
stone in production o-f general-
purpose synthetic rubber and its
major ingredients.
Firestone production manager
F. B, Galligan will lead the in
dustrial solicitation, serving with
two other group chairmen.
Working with them will be di
vision chairmen and team cap
tains.
Mr. Galligan seid that with
the shorter campaign and the
record goal, the UF realizes that
it would demand “a little harder
work on the part of everyone
for a successful effort.”
This will be the ninth year
that Firestone Textiles has par
ticipated in the Greater Gas
tonia United Fund. Last year,
employees contributed $13,593.53
—one of the largest corporate
gifts from business and indus
try.
Mr. Galligan pointed out that
dates for the United Fund solici
tation at Firestone would coin
cide with those of the Greater
Gastonia fund drive.

Family Emphasis On‘Y’Membership Sign-Up
Young, old, or in between
—there’s something interest
ing and worthwhile for you
at the Gaston County YMCA.
And Firestone employees
will have opportunity to "join
the Y when the in - plant
membership drive is held
Sept. 11-22.
F. B. Harrison of Main Office,
chairman of membership enroll
ment here, said that individuals
and families can this time join
the Y on a six-month basis.
Next March, membership will
be resumed on a one-year basis.
At Firestone, membership so
licitation will be concerned
mostly with those people who
have not yet discovered the
wide variety of services offered
at the local Y.
Eye-Saving Month
September is National Sight-
Saving Month—and a good time
to take stock of your own eye-
health scoreboard.
When did you last have a
thorough, professional examina
tion?
The Na+ional Society for the
Prevention of Blindness recom
mends an examination every
two years, especially for men
and women 40 years or older.
“We want to emphasize the
family-membership idea,” Mr.
Harrison added. “There are so
many rewarding activities and
services for every member of
the employee family—and fam
ily membership is so much
cheaper.”
Employees will be contactei
on the job during the sign-up
period this month. Dates are
timely, in that renewal of cur
rent memberships is due by Sep
tember 30.
Program One Of The Best
The Gaston County YMCA,
open since early 1^60, is recog
nized as offering one of the most
outstanding programs of any Y

program are health, recreation,
social, educational, religious,
self-improvement, and many
other services.
Most people are familiar with
the Y’s services to youth,
through its programs of ath
