Mrs. Newton has one year re maining in her second term as president of the North Carolina Association of Industrial Nurses. To AAIN Meeting Mrs. A. T. Newton, Firestone third-shift nurse, will attend the annual meeting of local, state and national presidents of in dustrial nurses associations this m.onth. The conference-type meeting will convene at the Shamrock- Hilton Hotel in Houston, Texas, Polybutadiene Facility Set For Brazil The Firestone company will build a polybutadiene rubber factory at Recife, Brazil—the first of its kind in South Amer ica. The facility will have an annual capacity of 27,500 metric tons 2,205 pounds) of polybuta diene, a synthetic which actual ly is superior to natural rubber in some respects. Construction, to begin this fall, is expected to be completed in about two years. The Recife plant is sponsored by a Brazil ian government agency created to promote industrial develop ment in the northeastern part of the country. This will be the third plant in which Firestone will manufac ture polybutadiene. One at Orange, Texas, began producing last spring with an annual capa city of 30,000 long tons (2,240 pounds); and production is planned to begin at a new plant at Port Jerome, France late this year. AT RECIFE, alcohol will be derived from sugar cane as the raw material for butadiene, October 17-November 3 UF Seeks $184,105 In Short Campaign The Greater Gastonia United Fund this year will seek a goal of $184,105.25, in less time than ever before. Campaign chairman Frank Matthews has announced that the fund raising drive will be from October 17 to November 3—a little less than three weeks. The new goal, representing the pro posed budget for the coming year, is increased some $5,000 over last year’s figure of $179,000. ir-i tadiene rubber. Facilities for production of tex tiles and foam rubber have since been added to the plant. In 1956 the company established a 22,000-acre rubber plantation near Itubera in the eastern part of Brazil. The Lummus Company of New York will build the Recife plant. Lummus also is building f a 0 i 1 i t i e s at Bareilly. India, which will be operated by Fire stone in production o-f general- purpose synthetic rubber and its major ingredients. Firestone production manager F. B, Galligan will lead the in dustrial solicitation, serving with two other group chairmen. Working with them will be di vision chairmen and team cap tains. Mr. Galligan seid that with the shorter campaign and the record goal, the UF realizes that it would demand “a little harder work on the part of everyone for a successful effort.” This will be the ninth year that Firestone Textiles has par ticipated in the Greater Gas tonia United Fund. Last year, employees contributed $13,593.53 —one of the largest corporate gifts from business and indus try. Mr. Galligan pointed out that dates for the United Fund solici tation at Firestone would coin cide with those of the Greater Gastonia fund drive. September 11 - 22 Family Emphasis On‘Y’Membership Sign-Up Young, old, or in between —there’s something interest ing and worthwhile for you at the Gaston County YMCA. And Firestone employees will have opportunity to "join the Y when the in - plant membership drive is held Sept. 11-22. F. B. Harrison of Main Office, chairman of membership enroll ment here, said that individuals and families can this time join the Y on a six-month basis. Next March, membership will be resumed on a one-year basis. At Firestone, membership so licitation will be concerned mostly with those people who have not yet discovered the wide variety of services offered at the local Y. Eye-Saving Month September is National Sight- Saving Month—and a good time to take stock of your own eye- health scoreboard. When did you last have a thorough, professional examina tion? The Na+ional Society for the Prevention of Blindness recom mends an examination every two years, especially for men and women 40 years or older. “We want to emphasize the family-membership idea,” Mr. Harrison added. “There are so many rewarding activities and services for every member of the employee family—and fam ily membership is so much cheaper.” Employees will be contactei on the job during the sign-up period this month. Dates are timely, in that renewal of cur rent memberships is due by Sep tember 30.
