news Gaston United Way Goal $750,000 Needed: $750,000 for 32 people-helping services. The Gaston County United Way will seek this amount in the fall, 1974, campaign to raise money for partici pating agencies during 1975. This year’s goal is a 9.5 per cent increase over that of last year ($685,114), but just $40,000 more than was pledged in last year’s funds collection. Campaign Chairman Tom Graham said that he is confident of Gaston County’s continued support for the united program. “The United Way benefits all residents of the community,” he said. “People working to gether and helping each other is a tradition in this great coun try of ours and especially in Gaston County.” The United Way will officially launch this year's campaign Oct. 2. At Firestone Textiles Com pany’s Gastonia plant, the United Way program is the only SKI-BEES in-plant solicitation during the year. Contributions from Fire stone people make up a major portion of the corporate gifts in the county each year. Firestone pledges for 1973 were $44,398.84. Wilson Plant In Production Lori AND HER MEDAL liOri James won a medal for first place in breast stroke of the girls’ 9 to 10-years group in the 1974 Gaston Invitational Swim Association championship in August. Representing Wesley Acres Swim Club, she competed with 18 girls. In the meet were teams from Wesley Acres, Gaston Country Club and hosts Gardner Acres Swim Club. Wesley Acres was regular season champion of the Association. Lori, who has been swimming just two years, earned during the season a second and fourth- place ribbon in meets. Alto gether she won a dozen ribbons in swim heats and other com petition. Her father, Bobby James, works in Quality Control. In midsummer, 800 steel- belted radial tires were load ed and the tractor-trailer was on its way to the cus tomer: General Motors Cor poration. It was the first shipment of production at the Wilson, N. C., Firestone plant. The Gastonia and Bowling Green plants of Firestone Tex tiles Company had a "behind- the-scenes" part in Wilson's first major production order. In recent months the S.A.T. replaced the School and College Ability Test (S.C.A.T.) as one of the means of evaluating ap plicants. Eligible sons and daughters of Firestone employees take the S.A.T. through the Educational Testing Service at only two scheduled test times. Dates are November 2 and December 7, 1974. This allows the company scholarship com mittee to receive the test scores by the application deadline, March 1, 1975. Students get S.A.T. registra tion forms and instruction ma terials from their high school counselors. Bobby Nichols In Gastonia Grandparents at Firestone are Carl James of Shop and Novella James of Data Processing. S. L. Owens, Lori’s great grandfather, is a retired Carding supervisor. John Owens of Purchasing and Lee Owens of Preparation are her uncles. Bobby Nichols, touring golfer and head pro at Fire stone Country Club, Akron, Ohio, was in Gastonia Au gust 12. He visited the Fire stone Textiles Company plant, and at the Gaston Country Club attended a luncheon and press meeting, conducted a how-to session and played an exhibition. His foursome included Gastonia pro Bruce Sudderth, Char lotte’s David Strawn, and Charlie Smith of Florence, S. C. The veteran of 16 years professional play is holder of 12 tour titles—his most re cent, the Canadian Open in late July. Some photos of his visit to the Firestone plant are on page 3.
