Industrial
Engineer
Dan Paul Howe joined the
Gastonia plant staff in June as
industrial engineer. He succeeds
Guido Martinelli who earlier
this year left the textile division
to become the company’s North
east U.S. sales representative in
Diversified Products.
DAN HOWE
NCSU
Graduate
Howe is a graduate of N.C.
State University where he re
ceived a B.S. degree in textile
technology in May this year.
In his Gastonia job, he works
on special assignments under di
rection of Philip R. Williams,
factory manager.
Dan lived with his family in
Panama Canal Zone through
grade school and junior high.
His father was a government
engineer with the Canal dredg
ing service. The elder Mr. Howe
retired and moved with the
family to Hendersonville, where
Dan attended West Henderson
High School.
He and wife Shelia have a
son, Nathan, age 2.
Has Five Years
Carolyn S. Stubbs marked her
fifth service anniversary at
Benneltsville in late July. She
is a splicer in Weaving.
On July 13, we experienced what could
have been a very bad fire in the #8 treating
unit at Gastonia. Only quick action by our
employees in controlling the blaze prevent
ed a large amount of damage.
Our newly-installed alarm system sum
moned the fire brigade from the plant, and
I am told that there was 100 percent re
sponse. Very prompt response by the City
Fire Department put our own brigade in a
standby role, but we are proud of their dem
onstrated willingness to do whatever was
required.
All of us should feel secure in knowing
these dedicated people are trained and
ready to protect our jobs and lives against
the ravages of fire.
There were others in the #8 area who
conducted themselves with intelligent brav
ery in prompt action before the firemen
arrived. To these men we extend our thanks
for a job extremely well done.
To those directly involved, and those will
ing to be involved, please accept my per
sonal appreciation for your fine attitude
about Firestone. I’m certain all employees
join me in saying “Thanks.”

Lots Of Fun — While It Lasted
The Firestone Playground summer season which be
gan June 13 continued through August 5—a shorter-than-
usual schedule. Youngsters in the West Gastonia plant
community had fun at swings, seasaws, wadding pool and
other recreation “trying to whip the summer heat.”
The company-owned facility is made available for
operation by Gastonia City Parks & Recreation Depart
ment. Children are supervised by City Recreation per
sonnel. These photos were made in the final days of the
playground season.
