PLANT MANAGER'S MESSAGE
By: J. Anand
August performance, although not up to standard,
vas considerably better than July. The production
schedule as a result of reduced customer demand
impacted productivity. Our projections at this
time show that this reduced schedule will continue
to some extent through October. We should be on a
full schedule in November.
Thanks to all for the good job done last month
reducing our waste. August waste of 1.75% to
production was the lowest this yeau:. Reduction of
waste, although challenging, is the best way to
reduce our gap and improve quality.
August was also a good month for safety - No
incidents recorded! Continue to be careful and
report any safety hazards ijnmediately to your
supervisor.
Lfustly, thanks to all who contributed to the United
Way. As a Pacesetter we exceeded our goal emd I £im
sure that the recipients of this assistance will
appreciate your generosity.

CUST(»tER COMMENTS
By: Jeff Heavner
Gastonia's August performance was an in^rovement
over July. As mentioned previously, we aure
soliciting customer feedback by sending them
questionnaires. So ffir, the customers' responses
have been very positive.
Gastonia had the opportunity to p£irticipate in an
audit of the Des Moines tire plant. A l£u:ge
portion of the audit was following Oes Moines'
processing of fabric through the calendering
process. An audit is where you hang your linen
out on the line for all the nei^bors to see. You
can imagine what kind of mood the tire people are
in after representatives from Gastonia, Akron, and
Decatur have spend three days telling them what
they £ire doing wrong. However, the Des Moines
tire people had no complaints £tnd were very
pleased with the fabric they were getting from
Gastonia. The only comment made concerning the,
Gastonia material was in respect to tight edges.
The edge of the Gastonia nylon has a tendency to
turn up.
The tire plants are having trouble handling rolls
of fabric without tearing the outside packaging.
Gastonia is offering assistance to them in this
area.
