FIBERS AND TEXTILES COMPANY GASTONIA PLANT SEPTEMBER. 1990 VOL. NO. 2 FLAirr KAHAGBR'S MBSSACK By; J. Anand During the past thirty days the number of injuries has been reduced. We have had one recordable injury in this period. This is encouraging and indicates that our efforts toward safety awareness are producing some results. Remember your safety is primarily your responsibility. The plant schedule calls for 5 day weeks until the middle of December. Based on tlie latest forecast we would plEin on shutting the plant from December 21 through New Year's holiday. However, this depends on tire sales and we will keep you posted on any ch2inges. The plant has made good improvement in the area of waste but the potential for further improvement is great. We need to accelerate our improvements in the area of quality, waste and productivity. The only way this can be accomplished is for everyone to be involved and taJce a more personal responsibility. We will be talking more about this in the next few weeks. I hope you enjoyed the meal you f>arned. During August we had five employees injured - one in the Electric Shop, two from Weaving and one in Twisting. As I have stated many times before, you must think about what you are doing every minute not to become complacent. When your mind drifts to something other than what is at hemd you lose contact.with what you are doing. Our safety teams continue to work on* projects to better your work environment. CatEAl CAUSE - GREAT KgrDiO; - CREAI RESOLI The United Way of Gaston County performs a great service fo^ all members of the community and deserves everyone's full support. Firestone Fibers & Textiles employees in Gastonia have supported the United Way for many years, and especially so in this year's campaign. By «ontribQting an all time record amount of money in this campaign, we have demonstrated to all members of the community that the United Way has our vote of confidence and strong support. Hopefully, other members of the community will follow our lead and increase their donations so that the United Way will get enough money to properly fund their member agencies who all supply very important and needed services. It is especially pleasing that so many members of our orgemization, perhaps some for the first time, have found out what cam be accomplished when everyone works together and is pulling on the same end of the rope. I have no doubt that as we continue to work together, we will find ways to improve our products, costs and working conditions. Congratulations to all for a successful ceunpaign, and a special thank you to all those who gave so generously of their time and talent to organize and conduct the campaign. Another special thanks goes to all the Fair Share Givers £md those who gave what they could. JOHN H. SPERR PRESIDENT FIBERS & TEXTILES DIVISION UHUKD WAY CAMPAIGM RKSUIJS By: Marty Duckworth We wish to themk every one of you for the tremendous achievements of the 1991 United Way Campaign. We have accomplished the "all time history record" of $36,681.19 or $77.71 per employee. This is 8^6 over last year and greater than our requested goal of $35,000 this year. We have also broken the highest percent of employee involvement ever — 82% gave either a fair share or a contribution. Last year we had 75% participation. These figures give us hope tliat some future campaign will have a 100% participation rate. Tills year's campaign included tours of United Way facilities, cholesterol and blood pressure checks and team involvement. Our special thanks go to our guest speakers, JESSE TOHNSON - WCNC Channel 36 News and VERNON PERRY - Gaston Boys Club. The results of this Ccunpaign shows that the United Way does bring out the best in all of us. SKKVICK AWARDS - SKPIBHBER Department MARSHALL B. HILL IRENE J. ROWLAND EUGENE F.
