Dear Jim;
Thanks for the copy of "Hot off the Hoover Rail." I guess I do feel pretty-
proud of that cop2/, having my picture on it and ever;^hing. ,
It helped me, run into one of the Lawndale boys down in Fresno last night. I was
down a:t the Bariiboo Boom at ths California Hotel and an M.P. came up and saluted. Of
course I began to vronder what I had done out of the way, for M.P.'s can call an
officer or anyone else down if they are out of line. He then told me that he was Roy
Carter but I hadn't reco^^nized him behind his newly acquired mustache. He and I v/ere
"Bus mates " going dovm to Ft. Jackson last summer to be inducted. He is getting
along swell and thanks to the "Hoover Rail" a couple of Lawndalers were able to run
into each other 3,000 miles from home.
This is very nice country. It is very v/arn in the day but cool at night. They
say it really does scorch here in summer. Well, maybe I won’t be here that long but
you can’t tell.
The camp we are in is the old Jap Concentration Camp and the tables, latrines
and everything are built recO. loiv, Cant you just imigino how I fit those fixtures.
Keep up the "Hoover Rail". I Icnor; all the boys enjoy it. There is no community
in the country that has such a wo;’2th of rorJ. down to earth nows that is of so much
interest to the boys in the servicc.

I want to congratulate you on the great improvement of your paper. You certain
ly are doing a good job of it.
V/e are now in the Engine phase of our school. I never knew an airplane was such
a complicated thing. I always thought a strut was something the Lawndale girls used
vdien trying to attract a fellow’s eyes. I also thought internal combustion was the
action some people had inside of'them just before they began shooting off steam. I
have learned lots of things here, including some of the fanciest "cuss" words I’ve
ever heai’d.
The Lord & Lady Halifax are to be guests here tomorrow. Much to my sorrow we
have to put on a demonstration for them.
Vfc are treated very nice hero. \7e have three movies nightly. Tea drJices every
Sunday afternoon. Clyde McCoy md his whole orchestra are enlisted here to enter
tain us. Yife have a verj'' gnod crchostr?. m.pde v.p from enlisted men, Vie have a
Marine Drum & Bugle Corps and of course a Navy Brass Band. The people in tovm are
very cool to us. They stare at us as if we arc freaks.

Just decided it was tiirie I’d get on the ball and put a line in to all you folks
back in Lawndale, That is one town I like to toll the follows in Mississippi about.
Say.’ I want to thank, all of you for sending us felD.0T;s the "Hot off the Hoover
Rail". It is one more masterpiece of work and I realJ.y enjoy reading it. I’m living
a busy life since I came into the Army, but I find time to read all the mail I get.
Sorry I haven’t written you all before now. Here at Canp Van Dorn, we are always be
hind with our v/riting.
The "Hoover Rail," really is s;^ell. It tolls all of us things we like to know
about. I just hope you can expand it more as you have been doing. I have just finish
ed reading the third copy. I always send it on home to my Mother too. As you all know
I'm from the sticks. It comes in hnndy to be from the mountains in the Army, Boy.’ I’m
sure you folks won’t know me v/hen I got in on that long promised furlough. They sure
have made a different fellow out of me since I’ve been here.
Tell all the folks "Hello" for me and to write sometime. I’ll be glad to give
you more details of Mississippi and Array life,
Here’s hoping we can all be back together ’fore long. From the way you folks
back in Lawndale are getting on the ball, it can’t be long. By the help of the Lord
wc’U make the grade.
