By Fred Beam I imagine most of you boys in the Armed Forces know as mch, if not more, about the Vforld Series than us fans here at home. It was just a little disappointing to me as I had hoped and planned to write a lot about the "I to_W you' so." liie champion St, Louis Cards. But, the way the Yanks took four of the five games, that will have to wait for at least one more -yea-r. Anyway I can crow a little about Mort Cooper ’cause he won the only game the Cards won, I know it took him some four or five starts to finally dov^n the American Leaguers, but just the same he did it. So boys the Yanks went back to the top as World Champions and after thinking it over I suppose thats where they belong. So long as they have guys like Charley Keller, Bill Dickey and Joe McCarthey around they vdll always be Champions, Speaking of champions I have in mind Duke and their foot ball team. Carolina and Duke met Saturday in the Duke Stadium and Dule won the game H to 7. This is what coach Tom Young of Carolina had to say after the game. 'Ti7e did our best, which was not quite good enou£^. But remember we have another chance, come November 20th," Hero's hoping Carolina evens up on this one so I can get Tom Foi’ney to write you the next column, N. C. State took a 54 - 6 walloping from Wake Forest Saturday night. It was the T.'orst defeat State has ever taken in its Sories with the Deacons, Davidson also took a walloping from U. S.Coast Guard eleven from Charleston, S. C. 36 - 0. Shelby’s High eleven won its third game in a row Friday, They setback Cherry- ville High 12 - 0, They started the season by losing to a more experienced Hickory Hi^ team. Since then they have defeated Nev;ton, Gaffney and Cherryvillo, They next plaj'- Morgantoh at Shelby this condng Friday night, Morg;..nton usually has a strong team rnd is favored over the Shelby lads, I suppose you laiow, or some of you at least, ivhich foot ball teams are consider ed the strongest in the nation. But, just in case you do not know, Notre Dame is the number one team in’the estimation of practicallj’- all the experts. Other high ranking teams include Army, Navy, Purdue, Pennsylvania, Southern California, Duke, Michigan, College of Pacific and others which we can’t remember, A nev; sport slant is that Tic^’- Ledford and Yelus Bivins and usual crowd are plan ning their annual Bear Hunting expedition, provided they can get someone to "pass the ammunition," Ticy and Velus and others have had quite a lot of success "Coon" hunting lately. They got 6 "Coons" tctal on two nights of hunting. There is a chance that some of them will go deer huntojag. Hiere also is a good chance that others may go dear hunt ing. This talk of hunting reminds us that you boys arc really the ones who will do the big hiinting and for much bigger game. There is no bag limit on Japs and Jevies, We v/ill do what we can to help you have a good season. Good Hunting to you and may you soon bo back to tell us your experiences.
