By - Fred Beam The basketball season came to a close some few. weeks ago, but we would like to tell you boys who are in oversea lands, bur Piedmont girls basketball team won the County Championship again. The touniDjnent was held at Belwood and our girls defeated Casar girls 37-23. The boys also played some fine ball in this tournament. They went to the finals before they lost to Fallston 29 - 20. They were leading Fallston at half time by 9 points - Then lost in the last half by that same score. The only baseball we have here in Cleveland County is Shelby High - To date they have played several nearby schools. They split a couple of games with Cherryville, Won the first game 11-8 ~ Then lost the second one 8 - U. They lost to Central High of Rutherfordton last Friday 11 - 0, but came back yesterday and defeated Tri- High of Caroleen 11-1. Shelby lost most of their boys from last years team and this year's teojn is mostly rookies, ' The Juniors have opened their workouts and most of the sports fans seem to think Shelby will have another good team this year. We understand Lawndale has several boys at these workouts and are showing up good. The good old Major League season opens tomorrow, Majbe vdll have more to write about for the next few months. Most'of the sports writers pick the St. Louis Card inals as the over-whelming favorite in the National League. Those same guys say it will be New York Yankees in the Araerican’League, Even "Doodle" Laughlin thinks they will win. The Draft has leveled all the teams to what looks like about the same. That would make if much easier for the last placers at the close of the 1943 season, to reach the top, this third war-time season! We w'ill just have to wait until they play a few weeks to see what it is going to be like. Spring has been a little slow in coming but fishing time is here again. In spite of man and his w^rs, men will fish when they have a chance. In many parts of the , world just lots of you boys will be fishing with rod and reel - altho some may be us ing m?Jceshift outfits. Some of you ;vill be fishing to heal'shattered nerves, while some may be fishing for food. But most of us fish for fish, fun pnd recrcation. Its terrible that there are a^ew men like Adolf Hitler and Tojo who vjagte and destroy the resources of the earth because of greed and hate and lust for power. When torped oes and mines and depth charges and great naval shells explode in water, they kill men and sink ships-- they also destroy thousands of tons of good fish - and there are tho usands of pople dependent on fish for food, Americans would rather fish than fight - But most of us had rather figjit than forfeit our right to fish. Yes, I suppose each one of you boys know what spring time means, but I don’t imagine a dictator would imder- stand. So we will buy more Bonds to supply you boys with more ships and more cargoes until the enemies of human rights are destroyed, and you boys can come home to stay. Happy is the man who can go fishing in his own land ;vithout fear or hate. May that day be not for off.
