7Ae PIEDMONITOR VOLUME 6 - NO. 10 PUBLISHED AND PRINTED BY PIEDMONT AVIATION, INC. OCTOBER 1954 HOME SWEET HOME - 1955 HilSI 'If - I F - ' ' - Ui IWl m C' *! Ip.-# I- I' €' On October 20, 1954, bids for the construction of Piedmont's new office building and hangar will be opened. Within the next thirty days, contracts to the successful bidder will be awarded, an4 probably in December, construction will begin. Construction estimates place completion date of the new building sometime in October, 1955. As the infant company grew in stature, it out-grew its plant facilities, and make-shifts have been mode to "do" for several years. As time passed, it became increasingly obvious that existing facilities had been expanded to the limit, and that some change was impera~ tive. Checking all possible avenues, a committee studied facilities on all other fields used by Piedmont, to see if a move from Winston- Salem were the answer. At the same time, various local civic groups began exploring ways and means of procuring facilities for Pied mont in Winston-Salem. These combined efforts have finally borne fruit, foi^ with approval of the necessary bond issue, the buildings will soon become a reality. The office building, built of brick, bluestone and glass, will house the executive offices which are presently located In the old bar racks. All hangar and overhaul facilities will be transferred to the hangar, which can house five DC-3s, or three Convairs, or two Constellations. Its carefully engineered space will permit free flow of work, which should result in decreased maintenance costs. The entire group of buildings has been designed with both beauty and comfort in mind and will be o most welcome addition to barracks - dwelling WInstonltes.
