SUNBURN TIME AGAIN This year, as always. Piedmont will be faced with the problem presented by over anxious nature lovers overwhelmed by the desire for a deep tan. Trouble is, rushing things usually winds up a pretty painful proposition. This year, take it easy. You'll get a bet ter tan, and it won't hurt .Brunettes should start out with no more than 30 minutes ex posure, blondes 20 minutes, redheads 15. Protect yourself with a good sun-tan oil, and if you can't wait for that tan, get an oil which has iodine added. If you do get a burn, take a hot soapy shower as soon os possible after exposure, then, and only then, coat the burned areas with a burn cream. Noxema or Unguentine are both good. Have fun, but remember, "It's bet ter to be safe than sorry." DON'T BE SILLY, YOUDIDNT FORGET AHYTHINQ A sweet young thing breezed into a flor ists shop, dashed up to the elderly gent running the place, saying "Do you have any passion poppy? The old gaezer looked up in surprise. "Gol ding it, "he said, "just you wait "til I get finished prunin' this rose. THOUGHT FOR THE MONTH while logging a few years ago, I helped to cut a tree that was more than 200 years old. In counting its growth rings, we found one series covering 11 years in which the rings were barely discernible . These denoted a cycle of drought. "The tree sure didn't grow much in that period, | said. My companion was a wise, philosophical old uncle and he replied, "On the con trary, the tree probably never mode more important growth than in those years." He saw I was puzzled and continued: "It had to put its roots down farther and far ther, year after year, to get nourishment where there was moisture enough to help it assimilate needed minerals. Now look here where the next rainy season began. Here are half a dozen years in any one of which the tree trunk expanded more than in all 11 dry years. Why? Because of the deep unseen strengthening of the root system in the ad^rse years." He let me think that over, and then con cluded,"Remember as you go through life, you'll have times when there'll seem no possibility of getting farther ahead .Then is the time to grow inside, and if you do, you will be amazed how you will expand when the right conditions prevail again.
