SOUTHERN PINES - Charlie Swift, our
official weather observer for o month, has
left for HKY to put in some time. We en
joyed working with him.
Casey, who can now observe the weather
legally, will soon be going on his long
awaited vacation.
Deer and bird hunting, golfing and horse
back riding are in full swing in this resort
area now and the Mid-Pines Hotel offers a
reduced rate for green-fees to any PA I
employees who like golfing. $2.00 is the
fee,so bring your clubs for a roundofgolf
in the "Sandhills of North Carolina."
ROANOKE - 4000! The magic number.
It's a race between ROA and TRI to see
who will board that many passengers first.
We came mighty close last month with
3841 andTRIwas not farbehind with 3638.
From the looks of the December schedule,
it won't be long until we do reach it,that
is if Old Man Winter is good to us. The
December schedule will give us another
round trip to DCA,making a total of five,
which have ideal arrival and departure
times. November really started off with
a bang. The first five days we boarded
670, 200 of which boarded Friday, Nov.
4. I think that this is a record for any
station to have boarded in one day. With
what we already have booked for this
month, and a holiday in there to boot,we
may just board 4000 this month. Look out,
TRI, we may beat you to the draw.
We welcome Jim Pickel to our group here
in the Star City. Jim came to us fromRC
you know RIC,that station that used to be
so busy, but now with the DCA flights,
the "Vacation Station." He'll be plenty
busy here, so it will seem like old times
in RIC forhim. Jim's home is in TRI,which
is not too far away, so he can get bock to
his old stompin' grounds more often.
Helen Holland was in the hospital the last
week in October and had her appendix
removed. Looks like she'll be out for a-
while. We sure miss her and hope that she
has a speedy recovery. Got right worried
about her there for awhile, because we
thought that her appendix had ruptured ,
which can sometimes be serious.
Virginia Price, down at CTO, wentto
the hospital a few days ago. She was on the
verge of pneumonia along with a general
run-down condition. She's doing pretty
good now, but will be in the hospital for
about a week. With Virginia out. Bob
Miller has his hands full keeping the CTO
going.
We have really had our share of sickness
among the employees this year. There have
been very few days that we haven't had
someone out because of sickness.
TRI-CITIES - It seems that sports and vaco-
tions have the limelight. In the sports
department, the deer fever has become very
contagious. It seems that most of the boys
are going to the backwoods of Tenn. One
of the hunters, namely L. Pickel, just pur
chased a dandy deer rifle. It's so large that
I think he will have to mount it on wheels
so he can tow it into deer country. R.
Norris, M.Ward and B. Johnson are also
going to give the deer safari a whirl. I
hope they have some luck, as we need some
hat racks around here.
While talking about sports, we are trying
to organize a basketball team. The stock
markets have really been on the up grade
in this section because of this. The market
for liniment has increased double. I think
we should have a pretty fair ball club, as
we have two seven foot guards and a four-
foot-nine center. The Globetrotters had
better watch out this season. All kidding
aside, we have height and some good
material. The main leaders of this squad
are "Pivot-mon" Sluder, "Hoop-Shot" Lind-
sley, "Dribbler" Puckett, "Crip" VanHuss
and "Footsie" Shanks. The boys practiced
with a local team the other night and did
pretty well for themselves. Good luck!
In the vacation department, we have B.
Johnson, R. Norris, L. Pickel and R. Pend-
leton,Esq. Johnson and Norris just returned
and Pickel and Esq. just started.
Bill Johnson made a good showing in Coca,
Fla., teasing the fish. He landed a 10 lb.
4 oz. sea trout and his wife latched onto
a 7 lb. 4 oz. sea trout. Bill's might be a
record caught on light-weight tackle. I
know it's a record for us fishermen at TRI.
R. Norris labored on his new home and
also finished reading his new volume of
comic books R. Pendleton, Esq. i s
planning a very interesting trip for his
vacation. He's taking a fast freight to
LGA, YML, LAS and ABQ. Ralph had
better watch those one arm bandits in LAS.
He has discontinued his night school class
es in swimming and bal Iroom dancing until
he returns. L.Pickel is going to try outhis
new rifle and live in the outdoors most of
his time. He will most likely have a case
of buck fever and frost bite when he re
turns.
WILMINGTON - Here's something to do
on your day off !!! 15 lbs. 15. ozs. of
Mackerel landed byB.Courtney from Cry
stal Pier.
I understand that H. Baldock made quite
a haul of blue fish the other day, too.
You folks that care for salt water fishing
just don't know what you're missing.
Well, J. Beatty has left us now gone
back to SDF. At least he was headed in
that general direction when he left. We
sure miss the old boy, too - used to cover
all of the Mid watches for us. So, things
are opt to get pretty busy until we get a
replacement, especial ly since France Neck
wear will begin shippingthose ties inabout
a week or so.
There isn't much else to say . . .except if
they keep backing up Flight 1, it will
soon be leaving the day before.
WINSTON SALEM (Field) - Hod a recent
change in personnel when Gene Sugg left
