TWELVE NEW FAIRCHILD F-27^s ORDERED
After several years of searching for asuit-
able replacement for the DC-3 and months
of intensive research and exhaustive studies,
Mr.T.H. Davis signed a contract on June
19 with the Fairchild Engine & Airplane
Corporation for 12 new Fairchild F -27s
with an option to obtain 12 more.
This order is the largest every pi aced by any
of the nation's thirteen local service carri
ers and represents the most complete re
equipment program undertaken in the local
service field, Mr. Davis said.
The 40 passenger, twin engined planes
which are powered bythe famous Rolls-Royce
Dart prop-jet engines will cost eight mil 1 ion
dollars and del ivery of the new Pacemaker
will begin in December of 1957.
Terming the plane "a new measure of mod
ern air travel", Mr. Davis said that "this
plane--which we wil I designate as the F-27
Pacemaker—is ideal forour use. " Its prop-
jet engines give it a cruising speed of 280
miles per hour and enable it to fly with a
degree of silence and smoothness surpass
ing all piston-powered commercial airliners
now fl ying. " Other advantages of the F-27
listed by Mr. Davis include greater visi
bility due to high-wing configuration ,
pressurized and air conditioned cabins, tri
cycle landing gear, excel lent short field
performance, and a range of 2,250 miles.
