ROANOKE -
Let's begin by menHoning the new agents.
Don Martin,a local chap, joined our force
in May. He is 19 years old, good looking,
and a very eligible bachelor.
Another new man is J. Jackson, who re
cently moved to ROA from Metropolis,
ill. He is married and has one child. An
ex-Air Force man and an old hand in the
aviation business.
Don Vance took his first flying lesson a
few days ago.We don't know yet whether
to evacuate the airport or just grin and
bear it. Any way, the boy is going to
learn to fly and who knows, one of these
days we may see his name on the flight
plan. Good luck, Don, and just stick
with it, maybe you won't be an agent all
your I ife.
Wehavethecar buyingestbunch of agents.
Jim Faucette recently purchased another
new Ford convertible. He wore the '55
model out in less than ayear. The new one
is, of all colors, black and sunset coral.
"Robin Hood" Metz has a '55 Ford sedan
now, and | don't think that the engine
has gotten cold on it yet.
Ail you hear around this station is car
talk and races. Speaking of races, Ronnie
Ellwanger wanted me to be sure that I
mentioned the new race track that we now
have in ROA. There are stockcar races on
an asphalt track and a dirt track for horse
races later this year. So all you racing fans
come on up sometime and watch Curt Turner
win a few in the new car class.
ROA had a little excitement this past
month. Sheena, Oueen of the Jungle TV
Star, came in on AA and caused quite a
commotion among ROA bachelor agents,
(married ones too). There for about 2 0
minutes you couldn't find an agent for
love or money, unless you found Sheena .
We had more "Chimps” around here that
day than you could shake a stick at.
Sheena's chimp wasn't with heron her
tour, but if she had needed a standin there
would have been about 10 willing P A I
agents handy.
There has been a rumor that ROA I imits may
be lowered to 900 feet. If the new limits
are put into effect it will mean that very
fewfl ights wil I pass us up, making a healthy
increase in our passenger load. Even with
out the reduction in landing I imits we hope
to board 4000 passengers this year. Last
month TRI almost made4000 and we weren't
far behind. It's a race to see who will be
the first to set a new record. Good luck
TRI, and keep up the good work.
i wouid like to take this opportunity to
congratulate all the new captains and
say "Welcome Aboard" to all the new
first officers. These boys are now in a
group of the world's finest airline pilots .
while on the subject of employee relations,
might brag about the friendly atmosphere
we have at ROA throughout the entire
airport. The cooperation that is shown be
tween all departments is something hard to
describe.
Early this spring, improvements were made
in our reservations office that have already
proven their worth. Air conditioning has
been added, which greatly relieves the
burden of working under the handicap of
sweltering heat. A partition was erected
to cut down on noise and enclosed the
office for better circulation of the cooled
air. After a new paint job, and the addition
of several framed pictures of Capital and
National ships, the office became the
most comfortable one in the terminal .
