F-27 SPECIFICATIONS STUDIED
A meeting was held in Winston-Salem on September 4 for the purpose of studying and
evaluating the F-27 Pacemaker specifications.
Theodore G. Linnert, Airline Pilots Association, head Engineering and Air Safety Dept.,
was present to assist in the study and to acquaint everyone with the advances that have
been mode in instrumentation,equipment and procedures for jet powered aircraft. Others
in attendance were Mr. T. H. Davis, President Piedmont Airlines, Mr. H. K. Saunders,
Vice President-Operations and Captain Don H. Rieger, Chairman of the Pilot's Study
Group, in addition to sub-committee members and representatives from all Departments
concerned. Final specifications are to be decided upon at a meeting later this month at
the Fairchild plant in Hagerstown, Maryland.

PIEDMONT CAPTAIN
HELPS BLINDED PILOT
TO SAFE LANDING
Captain Vic Conary, INT, was credited
with helping "talk down" to a safe land
ing a young Lynchburg, Voo pilot who
was almost totally blinded by a migraine
headache.
Through the combined efforts of Captain
Vic and CAA communicationists at LYH,
JulIanC. Harvey, Jr.,asecond Lieutenant
in the Virginia Air Notional Guard,made
a safe but "rather rough landing."
Lt. Harvey was flying from RICtoLYH
when the headache caused a temporary
loss of vision. Harvey said he couldn't
even see the instrument panel of his Army
L-19. Afterfive minutes of futile attempts
to contact LYH radio, he reached the
station on emergency frequency. Communi-
cationist on duty advised him to keep
"homing" on LYH until his aircraft could
be sighted over the airport and to stand
by for further instructions until a solution
could be worked out.
Captain Conary,in command of Piedmont
Airlines' Flight 14, was taxiing out for
take-off and volunteered to guide Harvey
down to the runway.
