BLUEFIELD - Another month of struggling has ended here, still trying for the 1,000 mark but as yet can't seem to make it. Our record month was August when we boarded 982 - but we are not giving up. CH A^'s gain and our loss has been the trans fer of John Comer, who started to work in CHW on the 15th. Sure seems odd here without John as he was the last of the em ployees who helped open the station. We want to wish John "oil the best" in CHW and I'm sure everyone will enjoy work ing with him. Vacations are about over here, Dwane Caudle is ending them with a few days visiting in the Carolines and W. Va. It would have been Carolina alone, but these W. Va. brunettt;s will bring him backl Ted Arnold started vacations here, drove to TY3, LOZ and lots of places - just sporting around in that new Buick. Ted Farrington and wife also used surface transportation on their vocation - motored to Maryland to visit relatives. They bought a new Chevy after their return. Then, AIR transportation began when Adron Woodruff made a flying trip to the west coast with several stop-overs including one in Casper to visit relatives. He got bumped off FAL in Laramie on the way to Casper and had to hitch-hike, but I still consider that by air as he put out his thumb and yelled, "Air you going my way?" Eddie Jones had the finest vacation ever when he flew to Europe in Sept. to visit all those Jones he had never seen before . His Dad came over from South Wales 4 5 years ago and has never been back, so the European trip was quite an experience - must say it was wonderful. Sure was nice having Ed Best visit with us and especially just in time to join in our farewell party for John at the La Saluta Club - and speaking of Rock-n'-Roll, you should see Ted Arnold and ask for a lesson. DUM-DE-DUM-DUMI My name’s Comer, 6 AM, October 2, opened up station , bent down to work combination on safe - Whatl - No safe. Called Ted Arnold out of bed, half awake he said someone just hid it, look oround. Wasn't true though, someone had entered through the trap door in furnace room and confronted with the convenience of our baggage cart, rolled our safe out to their car and drove away. One day later, safe was discovered in Brush Creek near body of man. Got all the wet money back - mystery still un solved but we're still working on it. The snapshot is of the party group menticn- ed - for John at the LaSaluta Club. CHARLOTTE - Newcomers to CLT are Earl Moore from [NT and Bill Almond from LYH. To these fellows we say welcome, along with Al Shulley of Pa. Can't understand why these big fellows come here, start eating grits and begin to lose weight. Al has moved his belt back six notches in three short months. Several fellows have been enjoying their vacations - J. D. West, Bob McAlphin and our District Supervisor. The many friends he has made along the route of the Pacemakers wil I be interested to know that Roger Newell has entered Duke U. this fall in pre-ministeral preparation. Roger was awarded a $600.00 scholarship for four years - continuing through to seven years if he completes his Seminary Train ing in the Divinity School. He also was awarded the Rotarian (Boy) of the month award of $100.00. With Nan in Bermuda, Johnny West out with a Virus, Bob Me Alphin on vacation and our very present help in trouble, Peter P. Jones on jury in IMN,you wouldn't think we were busy and undermanned, would you? CHARLESTON- CHW has always been the place to go for parties and activities, but this past month has found us all in a social "whirl." On September 8 Joe High,Sales Manager, gave us a hot dawg roast at Coon Skin Park. Although the first signs of the early fal I breezes were present, spirits were well in the partymood. Most of the cooler cats wore their Bermudas and pictures were made by station photographer , Don Garrett. A "Going Away Party" was held for Ann Isaacs on the 20th. Ann transferred to the DCA ticket counter. The party was held in the Sky Chef Club Room at the airport and a large group of friends and guests attended. We want to welcome Loretta Lancaster just transferring to CHW from DCA. Hope you feel welcome and I ike our I ively group. The first of October Eddie Booten will re turn from a service Leave of Absence. Irene has returned from vacation in MSY. While there she met the latest of the windy crew - Flossy. The trip down was fine but the return trip found Irene riding Capital Airlines, Trailways, Greyhound and Pied mont. Nothing like being bumped says Irene, to see more of the country side. Bob Wood is sporting a new Olds. It is really a fine looking car and Lee and Bob are planning many trips. The Glass House received the contract to cater Kanawha Airport, rep lac ing Sky Chef. Everyone is eagerly awaiting the day they take over. About time for the cold winter weather and the old familiar winter operations. CHW has already had its share of foggy weather and over flying flights. NORFOLK - Last month we lost Agent Bil I McGee as he resigned to attend Col lege to be a minister. The first part of September we lost another agent, Rodney Bowers, who was transferred to ROA,which is Roanoke's gain and Nor folk's loss. We all miss Rodney, especially (Cont'd. on Page 3 ) - 2 -
