ACCESSORY OVERHAUL Several new faces can be counted among the personnel in the Accessory Shop these days. They are H. E. Freeman, R. R. Kiser, J. V. Linville and D. L. Johnson. Welcome aboard. We are happy to report that Bobby Hoots' wife, Tib,is back homewithher familycfter spending ten days at City Hospital . Five new pieces of equipment have been added to the machine shop facilites. They include a mil 1 ing machine, large bed lathe, drill press and large arbor press. They should prove valuable in improving our efficiency and will be a great asset once “Red" Carter finds the instruction books. E. L. Hurt, Hydraulics Overhaul, is now the proud owner of a dry cleaning business and it is located on 6th Street, near Hanes Knitting Company. They do good work and besides,he needs the business. Cave, Lineman,was married to Miss Nancy Davis of Winston-Salem on October 20. The 1957 Beechcraft sales year just ended. Of interest to all Piedmont folks is the fact that four Beechcraft Super 1 3's have been sold in Winston-Salem during the past year. N73H was purchased by Hanes Hosiery Mills with Frank Groat as Chief Pilot. N49R was purchased by Krispy Kreme Doughnut Corporation with Rex Beamer as their pilot. N27R was sold to the R. J. Reynolds Tobacco Company, Chief Pilot Herb Drew, assisted by Grant Jeffries and "Curly” Kandzer pilot-mechanic. Th e Krispy Kreme Super 13 was the 300th to roll off the Beech production line and re ceived quite a bit of publicity. Messrs. T. H. Djvis, R. S. Northlngton, J. H. Culler and E . D.Morris, manager of the Fixed Base Operation in Norfolk, Va. attended a Piper Aircraft distributors meet ing in Williamsport, Pa. on October 2 3. They flew the newest addition to the Piper line, the Comanche. Piedmont Aviation now ranks fourth in the nation for aircraft sales and third in aircraft parts sales. We think this is a mighty fine record of achie vement and everyone involved is proud. Bill O'Neal,colorful Chief Flight Instructor for Piedmont Aviation in Winston-Salem has been inthslocal news recently with his collection of 108 model airplanes which he has constructed. They now hang from the ceiling in the Flight Instructor's office. Bill is certainly to be commended for his Interest and hard work in making our Flight School one of the best organized and most efficiently operated schools in the South east . IN THE NBAA HANGAR —W. F. Davis "In the NBAA Hangar" is the means by which we hope to convey to everyone on a monthly basis, a report of the executive and corporate aircraft maintenance activity at the main overhaul base in Winston Salem. NBAA standsforthe National Business Air craft Association, an organization represent ing the owners, operators and pilots who fly the country's business aircraft. Management Services of Knoxville, Tenn. had both of their DC-3's in for a 400 hour inspection and prop overhaul . Their Chief pilot is Hap Wilson. Noland Company of Newport News brought in their Lodestar, flown by Karl S t y n e, for an engine change, installation of new de-icer boots and other miscellaneous re pairs. The ALCOA DC-3, flown by Chief Pilot Dave Flannery, was in for a fuel tank change and new de-icer boots. Tennessee Eastman's DC-3, flown by Leo Boyd, was in for a 100 hour inspection and installation of Maximizer cowling and cyl inder baffles. Sears Roebuck's DC-3, flown by Bill Dameron, was in for new de-icer boots, R. J. Reynolds Tobacco Company's DC-3 flown by Herb Drew had an engine change . C. J. Langenfelder and Sons' DC - 3, flown by Chief Pilot Jack King, was in for on air control change and miscellaneous repairs. S & W Cafeteria's DC-3, flown by Chief Pilot Lawrence Gesse, was in for new tires and miscellaneous repairs. Detroit Steel Corporation's DC-3, flown by Chief Pilot Bill Ashton, was in for land ing gear overhaul andshort stack Installation Bendix Aviation's DC-3 from Detroit,Mich . flown by Spike Brooks was in for wheel well doors, short stacks, wing overhaul, fuel tankoverhaul and other miscellaneous items. CONARY HONORED BY DeMOLAY Captain Vic Conary, based in INT, was recently awarded the DeMolay Legion of Honor degree. The Legion of Honor is conferred to past DeMolay's for their acts of heroism or unusual service to others in their field of endeavor. In presenting this degree to Caftain Con ary, recognition was given to his partici pation in helping a temporarily blinded pilot make a safe landing in Lynchburg, Virginia. The Order of the DeMolay is asecret order for young men between the ages of 14-21, sponsored by the Masonic Order. Inactive membership status may be retained for life
