NEW TELETYPE SYSTEM (Continued from Page 4) the hundreds of feet of copy received at each station doily. This reduces the possibility of overlooking a message and results in significant paper savings. Ahigh degree of dependability of message transmission is experienced since a means Is provided to prevent loss of messages by circuit and station assurance features. Centralized control features at Winston- Salem furnish an overall view of the system's operation, permit manual control of the circuits during abnormal conditions as desired and include arrangements to skip stations which are off the circuit. Messages can be transmitted on a priority basis from any station on the system when the need arises. The directing featureof the 83 System Is a common form of “magic brain" which can be likened to a dial telephone. That is, you perforate into a paper tape certain call directing codes (using the telephone you dial certain dial directing codes - telephone numbers) which are than stored temporarily in the machine while it refers to Its permanent memory to see what to do. The machine then does it - which is automation-in accordance with a prede termined arrangement. The d irecting of messages to specific stations in an automatic manner requires exactness, as the directing mechanism can not think. Mock mention of this fallacy can be found in asign frequentiy dispiayed which reads, "Don't think, let the machine do it for you." Actually, the racks of electrical components used in the 83 System directing function cannot even begin reason ing unless human intelligence programs each and every logical step. In other words when you dial your telephone,, you use specific letters and digits in order to communication with a person at a particular station. Similarly, you must perforate in tape, certain predetermined letters and functions in order to communicate (direct a message) to a particular station. In conclusion, everything possible has been done to provide Piedmont Airlines with a teletypewriter system fal I ing within the parameters of accuracy, speed and economy but it still is dependent, although toamuch lesser degree on the intelligent direction by the originator of the message.
