PAGE FOUR THE PIEDMONITOR OCTOBER, 1959 Explorer Scout Builds Rockets Plans To Launch 11-Foot Missile A Winston-Salem Explorer Scout has a proud mother these days, and rightly so. The scout is Larry Bennett who, with help from the Navy, expects to be firing soon an eleven-foot rocket he and three high school pals designed and built. The mother is Zephya (Mrs. Paul A.) Bennett of Piedmont’s accounting department. She and Mr. Bennett have encouraged Larry in his “shooting for the stars” endeavors for the past four years. Interest Began Larry’s general interest in roc kets goes back several years, but it was in 1955 that he de cided to explore the field as thoroughly as he could. Since then he says his interest has been “like a snowball rolling downhill.” Two years ago Larry was joined by three other explorer scouts in the rocket work. They are Phillip Mayrand, Vincent Young and LaVern Wright. . Larry says the real progress of the group has been in the development of a special fuel. That and a guidance system similar to the one used in the Army’s NIKE missile (though invented without any help from the rocket’s manufacturer) have made Larry’s accomplishments of interest to the Armed Forces. Latest Design The latest design, measuring eleven feet, was developed by the group with Larry in charge of the electronics and nose-cone work, Vincent and Larry in the body design division and Phil lip and LaVern in the fuel divi sion. Estimated altitude of this “monster missile” is between ten and fifteen miles. The size and scope make it impossible to fire on the present firing grounds built by the boys. When the scouts go with the Navy to fire the latest rocket of their design, they plan to car ry four copies of the model. “With four rockets,” said Larry, “we can be assured of successful firings.” Larry, who is a junior at Reynolds High School, hopes to stay with rocket work and make it a career. He said he had found out one important thing in his work so far: that an indi vidual cannot do it alone. One of the real problems, ac cording to Larry, has been mon ey. Including the guidance sys- V I imm mmm BiniUdcutA, GENIUS AT WORK Larry Bennett shows that building rockets |-akes many hours of research and planning. His "space laboratory" is located in the Bennett basement in Winston-Salem. tem, each of the larger rockets costs about $400 to fire. The rocket group has relied upon contributions to continue work ing. But, of course, their ingen uity has turned some common place items into rocket parts. Has Silver Award Larry is an Eagle Scout and has received the Silver Award for meritorious achievement in scouting. “Thanks to Piedmont,” he added. While working on the award, he received instruction in radio, sheet metal construc tion and overhaul from Pied mont employees. N. C. State College is now first on his list for college work. He says he doesn’t have any favorite subjects in school, but “likes them all.” And as for other interests besides rockets, he names “girls.” BLOCK TO BLOCK . . . (Continued from Page Two) George Hicks ( D C A ) has bought a J-3 Cub and is flying night and day (so we under stand) to get off his commercial and instrument ratings. Jim Connor (DCA, also) is in terested in doing the same thing and is looking for a small air plane. Anyone who has a good one for sale might give him a buzz. Yours , Truly attended the Airlines Customer Relations Con ference at beautiful Idaho Springs near Denver. Had a good business session with the indus try representatives and enjoyed riding Continental’s Golden Jet from Chicago out and back. Till next month, then. Fare Attends Mail Rate Meet For Local Service Carriers Milton F. Fare, Piedmont Air lines secretary and assistant treasurer, attended a meeting of local service airlines in Wash ington August 19 and 20. Mr. Fare and representatives of the twelve other local service carriers met to consider a re vised class mail rate plan pro posed by the mail rates staff of the Civil Aeronautics Board. The CAB requested each local carrier to comment on the pro posed revision. Piedmont’s com ments have been submitted. The company endorses the class rate principle. A class rate for local carriers would establish final prospec tive rates. Piedmont now oper ates on a temporary rate estab lished in January, 1959. James Durfee, chairman of the CAB, who recently spoke on the proposal, said, “Our objectives would introduce many incen tives, give government better control over subsidies and take the CAB out of the business of second-guessing management. “Until we have a more ration al scheme there will be no fi nancial stability in the local transport industry.” MARRIAGES E.
