PAGE SIX THE PIEDMONITOR JUNE, 1961 PlEVmNT PRESS NOTES SHENANDOAH—Staffers seem to be pretty busy around the SHD area lately. Bill Pearman writes that Guy Ravvley and his wife jetted down to Florida recently to visit relatives. They’re all looking for civic improvement at Mt. Sydney, Va. since Doelpli Pitcock joined the Ruritan Club. Jim Dallas and Bob Lipscomb are also civic-minded these days. Jim took his Boy Scout troop to Verona, Va. to be guests of the Lions Club there, and Bob acted as master of ceremonies for the event. Mitch Everhart is touring the valley with his family and guests Don Monroe and Shirley Lamb. Recent visitors to SHD have been R. E. Turbyville, Ed Best, Mike Hanson of Varig Airlines, John Tornillo and Ruff Sim mons of Alitalia Airlines, Martha Roberts of Scandinavian Airlines, and Baden Peters of Northeast Airlines. CHARLESTON—Irene Kiser and Jim McCormick were the winners of trips to Los Angeles courtesy of AAL. Also planning a trip to LAX is Manager Bob Hill—ditto Chief Agent Paul Kelley. Vacationers include John Comer and his wife at Miami Beach and Jim Birthiseal, who spent his time off farming in Jackson County. A trip is not the only lucky thing happening to Jim McCormick lately. He also' has a brand new seven-pound baby boy. New Agent Allen Perry is welcomed, replacing Ward Scrannage who is now in Clarksburg with Lake Central Airlines. CRW business during May was good, reports Charlotte Fuda, and short of quota by only four passengers. LYNCHBURG—Frank Reynolds writes, “Vacation time is here again. Agent Charlotte Winfrey just returned to work after spend ing a few days in New Orleans and Atlanta. Agent Ralph Ford is now on vacation doing a lot of fishing. We’re glad to have Ted Thompson back after a short bout with a virus. The big golf game between Ed Best and Claude Kiger has taken place. All scores are withheld, of course, but the personnel at LYH have strong hunches as to who won. A survey recently held shows that each Operations Agent at this station moves six tons of freight, express, etc, per month. This included all planing, deplaning, and total handling.” ROCKY MOUNT—Frank Slone reports that work on the new terminal building is progressing slowly, and at the present rate will be ready for occupancy by early August. Agents Rick Talley and Bo Fields have been setting up a bachelor’s apartment and doing some frog gigging on the side. They caught 43 frogs one night and 53 another night. Slone is commuting between RMT and LYH every weekend since his family hasn’t moved to RMT as yet. Lead Agent Henry Minnick is planning a camping and fish ing trip the first of July. m TCA mterliner TKfiHS f¥>RCMT no use, F/ncWy. Daddy won’/ allow me fo go out with on Airline man/" GREENSBORO—Reporter Gene Shore has been logging many F-27 hours lately between GSO and Myrtle Beach. He always comes back as white as he went down, so now the speculation is whether he ever makes it down to the sand and surf. Says Gene about still another sun worshipper, “Earl Moore recently went down to Myrtle but came back with a tanfastic suntan. After his arrival back home he thought he still needed more sun so got in his new Corvette convertible and journeyed down to the Florida coast. Lyle Cox recently returned from a trip to New York, coming back with his Southern accent saying those Yankees are too fast for him. We wish to welcome new Agents William Wallace and Charles Thomas. We also want to welcome our new Chief Agent C. R. Blackman who transferred from CMH. Our manager, Vernon Moore, has left (but not for good) for a vacation in Florida. Two Agents we don’t want to leave out are Richard Smith and Tom Crouch. Both say they haven’t been anywhere or done anything exciting but work — what else is more exciting?” MYRTLE BEACH—Steve Mauldin extends greetings from the MYR sand dunes and continues, “Once again we are open here for the season. Helping Station Manager Charlie Donahoo with all his problems this year are Norman Miller, transfer from TYS; Dave McGregor, transfer from AVL; and yours truly, transfer from INT-F. As per usual, MYR has had its share of Piedmont visitors. First to visit us were Judy and Dan Cox, children of Capt. William Cox. Among Our other visitors were Les Watson, INTC; Pete Jones, and R. H. Dekay, ILM; Mitch Evei’hart, INTX; Cleta Mar shall, INTE; and Mr. and Mrs. F. D. Spillman, INT. Taking ad vantage of the discount offered by Gay Manor Hotel to Piedmont employees have been Bobbie Henley, SDF; Fran Dresser, LYH; Gary Lewis, INT; Jan Young and Joanne Short, CMH; and Ann Kennedy, INT. Oh, yes, let’s not forget our weekly visits by Gene Shore, GSO. That’s all for now; the water is fine so drop on down to MYR when you can.” NORFOLK—Bob Wylie says the eatin’ fish are really jumping around ORF and cites Walt Tackenberg, Joe Mathias, Ed McMil- Managers at the Asheville airport prepare to give VIP treatment to guests at the July ALTA convention there. Discussing plans are (left to right) Dick Wettach, United Air Lines Station Manager; Don Britt, As sistant to President Davis; Jack Gwennap, Piedmont Station Manager; and Herb Nabors, Delta Station Manager. Ian, and Larry Redden to prove it. They guarantee you’ll catch all you want and then some. Art Whittaker seems to be having a bit of trouble with his dog. Writes Bob, “When last seen Art was once again headed for jail, not for himself, but to retrieve his faithful hound Pedro. Pedro has completed his fourth or fifth terra at the city pound. Whit says he’s the only one around here who has a dog that’s a three time loser!” KNOXVILLE—Carl Simpson sends these notes on the latest TYS activities; “We have a new Agent, Albert Duckett, formerly with Southeast Airlines. He replaces Norman Miller who has been transferred to MYR. Sam Vance has just returned from HOU where he spent his vacation. Harold Giles is now vacationing and will soon be moving into his new home. Robert Klemt has been hired to work at the new maintenance base, and George Hendrix of INT and Joe Selvia of ROA have been helping set up the opera tion.” CHARLOTTESVILLE—Things were a bit hectic at CHO re cently, says Libby Reed, with the University of Virginia students pouring through in the end-of-term rush. Leonard Martin, who is presently vacationing with Uncle Sam, has a new son, J. L. Martin, Jr. Don Britt, INT, was a recent visitor there, joining city and county officials in a tour of the new CHO quarters. Other visitors include Ronnie Price, ROA; Ray Mohler, PHF; Guy Rawley and family, SHD; Don Monroe, SHD; and Baden Peters, Northeast Airlines. LEXINGTON—Bruce Ball reports on vacations and a new arrival. Walter Platt and his family took their time off to visit Tampa and Boston. Leamon Wilcox is back at the shop after an exciting but busy vacation. Seems the Stork decided this would be a good time to visit the Wilcox home. He left a seven and a half pound girl named Cynthia Ann. A. B. Casey visited New Bern recently but according to Bruce didn’t do so well. He can add to his store of fish stories anyway. BLUEFIELD—Ted Farrington welcomes BUI Grubbs to their neck of the woods and bids him good luck in the new job. Says Ted, “. . . we look forward to working with him in ‘Nature’s Air Conditioned City.’ . . . Lemonade this year? That’s what we’re wondering. As you know, the old tradition of BLF is that when the temperature reaches 90 degrees the Chamber of Commerce sponsors free lemonade for everyone in town, served by some of Bluefield’s lovelies. Last year there was no lemonade the entire summer but seems like it’s getting awfully warm here this time.” WILMINGTON—Ed Kerr turns sports reporter this issue and sends news of the ILM bowling team. He writes, “Piedmont Air lines ended up in second place this season in the Goldbricks League of the Wilmington Bowling Association. Piedmont led the league most of the season but dropped to second place May 5th. It was a fight to the finish, and the last night of the tournament the team lost the championship by two big pins. Members of the Piedmont Airlines team were: Ed Benton, Chief Agent; Pete Jones, Division Station Supervisor; A1 Huddleston, Division Chief Purser; Phil Onoff, Captain; Ed Kerr, Agent; and C. Feanord, Agent. Ed Benton was Captain of the team, and Pete Jones was President of the Goldbricks’ League for the ’60-’61 season. We also have good representation for the ’61-’62 season as officers elected for the coming year are A1 Huddleston, Vice President, and Ed Benton, Secretary-Treasurer. Ed Benton was also elected Captain of the team.” LOUISVILLE—Wedding bells are ringing around the station. Paul Masterson has a new bride—the former Caroll Burgers, a Delta employee. Bobbie Henley plans a July wedding with Ed French. Howard Hughes notes that the Derby went off rather well this year. He has his doubts about ever getting used to it finan cially, but otherwise it was smooth sailing. Two new papas have joined the ranks. Bob Gilbert and Charles Smith both have sons. Lowell Beach just returned from a motor tour to Florida, but ac cording to Howard the only thing Lowell has to show for it is a left arm sunburn. Recent visitors there include Vice President H. K. Saunders, Howard Cartwright, and John Lewis. President T. H. Davis spent a day at SDF and presented Bob Gilbert, Jim Eames and Cliff Haycraft with their five year pins, and Parker (Continued on Page Two) PROMOTIONS J. A. Rehder, Maint. She was following a recipe which said, “Don’t stir for fifteen minutes.” * * * Impossible! Accept that, and you will never attempt to win through. Spell the word “I’m Possible,” and you will find that what others thought impossible is only more difficult.—Shaw’s Price List, London. * * * A good driver is a good citizen —you can be both and be safe. A hand out is a good turn. A little courtesy can save a pack of trouble. A little courtesy goes a long way toward preventing a crash. Be a careful driver—you’ll be proud of it. Courtesy is contagious—let’s start an epidemic. Courtesy and safe driving go hand in hand. Cutting in is fun at dances, but in traffic, why take chances?
