PAGE FOUR THE PIEDMONITOR NOVEMBER, 1961 PIEDMONT PRESS NOTES A New Bowling League TRI-CITIES — A brand new bowling league is in the TRI news this month. Writes Susan DeMarco, “Agents have entered a bowling league for the first time and naturally enough have come from the bottom of the list to third place in the Lazy Six League at Johnson City. Members of our new team are Don Woods, Brad Moody, Glenn Shanks, Jim Pickel, Ray Norris, Jim Starr, Lee Linsley, and Hack Van Huss. Also, speaking of sports, Agents Bill Hamilton, Brad Moody, Glenn Shanks, and Station Manager Don Woods traveled to Knoxville for the exciting Tennessee-Georgia Tech game. Who’s running the station? The girls, of course!” New Agents Welcomed KINSTON — Keith Smith extends a welcome to new Agent Lawrence Brooks and sends good luck wishes to Thomas (Zero) Zabawchuck who has transferred to DC A. A famous visitor to ISO recently was “Music Man” Webb Pierce. Holder High Average KNOXVILLE — The bowling team there has, alas, dropped to sixth place. Capt. Jim Holder, however, holds the high league average of 174. Carl Simpson welcomes Rudy Yontz back to Pied mont, and notes that Norman Miller is now back on TYS soil after tours of duty at MYF and SOP. Bob Klemt has returned from INT and Martin 404 ground school while Rudy Yontz from maintenance and Capt. Harvin Hembel and F/0 Deral Stovall began their Martin training November 13. Meet FAY personnel Robert L. Nunnery (left) and Horace E. Bryant. Bob has been with Piedmont since July, 1960. Shortly after joining the company he married the former June Bennett. They live in their new home near Steadman, N. C. Bob has a long time interest in aviation — he and his brothers have several airplanes and their own landing strip. Horace Bryant joined Piedmont in June, 1954, after spending four years with the Navy. He married the former Frances Baker early in 1961. They too have a new house and are making their home near FAY. Top Month For CLT CHARLOTTE — October was a tip-top month for CLT, says Madge Lanier. Boardings total 3,971, the largest number ever re corded there, and a figure which was over quota by 1,676 passen gers. Station Manager Johnnie Newell also reported a record month for air mail, express, and air freight .The newest addition to the Bobby Harrelson family is little Lisa Quen, who at birth weighed eight pounds. Fort Bragg JAMTO Manager Bill Dearing just returned from a short vacation in Mexico City. DCA Gets Bigger Counter WASHINGTON — From the capitol comes this word from Farrell Lee: “Washington has been showing off a new and larger ticket counter for the past month. Piedmont had been sharing space with Northeast Airlines on the west side of the North Terminal. The new ticket counter is on the east side with de parting bags coming out only a short distance from Piedmont’s gate by means of a conveyor belt. With the larger facility it is much easier to give the passengers that personal attention that they like so well when they come to Piedmont. “Glenn Burton is back to work in operations after being hospitalized for an operation. Nine days in the hospital is not my idea of a vacation, says Glenn. Sherry Rupe is back from an earth quaking vacation. Sherry went to Los Angeles where she spent time with relatives. Some of the highlights were visits to Knotts Berry Farm and Disney Land, and being at the scene of a real earth quake. ‘It sure is a frightening experience,’ was Sherry’s comment. “Station Manager Bill Clark and his wife have returned from a vacation at TRI. They attended a 50th wedding anniversary party of Mr. Clark’s parents. Other vacationers are Charles King, who visited relatives in Rhode Island, and Bill Stafford, who, well —we’re not sure about yet—may have rented a harem in Casa- patinaque!” Everybody's Buying Cars CINCINNATI-F — The crew there is a car-buyin’ group, ac cording to Bob Steppe. Newcomers Elaine Sturr and Ron Kelly have new Corvairs, while Jim Villella is sporting a new Pontiac. On the vacation scene, Cody Reynolds spent some time flying around the system familiarizing himself with the different cities and personnel. Elaine Sturr spent a few days in New York and Roger Morelock went to Indiana. Charlene Seaver is going to the Airlines’ Interline Christmas Party in Las Vegas after a short visit to Iowa. “Our bowling team is currently in fifth place,” continues Bob, “with Ed Laskowski leading the way with a 165 average. For six straight weeks, Ed has had a better than 500 series each week. Preparations are being made for our annual Christmas party which will be held on December 14.” Chased By An Electra? NORFOLK — Bob Wylie tells this story about two happenings at ORF: “Have you ever been chased by a Lockheed Electra? If not just ask Grover Twiddy what it’s like. One evening while working in Flight 34, Twiddy was on the ramp waiting to park same when out of the black of night what should appear before him but a National Electra. When last seen Twiddy was running around the ramp waving his arms like he was shooing flies shout ing ‘Go Away! Go Away!’ and the plane was going around in circles wondering where he was supposed to park. Later it was learned that the pilot hadn’t been in Norfolk for some five years and didn’t know the terminal had changed. As for Twiddy, all he could say was, ‘I thought he was going to run right over me!’ “Another amusing incident came about one day when Bill Halsey was preparing to load baggage on a fhght. He picked up a bag to put on the cart when something inside the case began to buzz. Bill wasted no time in escorting the bag outside away from the terminal and immediately summoned Art Whittaker. After a little detective work they found the owner of the bag and had him open it. What did they find? No, it wasn’t a bomb but just another miracle of our age known as a cordless electric shaver, “We’d like to welcome to our station two new agents— Karen Kingsley and E. Dail. May they have a long and happy future with Piedmont. Parrish Back On Job LOUISVILLE — After being hospitalized for two weeks with a bronchial disorder. Station Manager Bruce Parrish is well and back on the job. And not a minute too soon, says reporter Howard Hughes, with 500 fruit cakes and 500 pounds of peanut brittle to sell for the local Kiwanis Club. The United Appeal drive was very successful there with nearly every employee contributing. Recent vacationers include Don Carlyle to Michigan and the Parker Haleys to Florida and Nassau. President T. H. Davis was a recent visitor there as well as Tom Cowen of CVG. Plans are underway for remodeling the ticket counter. The work will be done under the direction of Mac Moore. All Helped United Fund LYNCHBURG — LYH chalked up 100 per cent participation in the local United Fund drive. They also broke their station quota for the past month plus setting a new air freight and ex press record with 210 freight shipments totaling 24,738 pounds. Work on the new tower is progressing, says Frank Reynolds, along with construction on the weather bureau and the runways. Birthisel Has Son CHARLESTON — The latest news on the CRW crew was sent by Charlotte Fuda who writes, “Congratulations to Jim Birthisel, the proud papa of a six pound, two ounce baby boy, James Ed ward, Jr. George Scherer spent his vacation working, working working. George just rented a small farm, 175 acres, complete with chicken house and barn. The land has grown up in weeds and all the buildings needed cleaning and repairs. So far no crops or livestock, just two chickens and two dogs. “American Airlines sponsored a terrific interline party, with a weiner roast and hamburger fry held at Coonskin Park October 27. Piedmont was well represented with Agents coming from HTS, PKB, and BLF for the occasion. Many fine prizes were given away including candy, lobsters, champagne, and two tickets to Los Angeles. The best prize of all was won by our own Manager, Bob Hill — a brand new copy of the O.A.G. “We are still laughing here at a United Agent who was check ing in a passenger carrying a small dog wrapped in a pink baby blanket. The Agent, thinking the bundle was a baby, stared in opened-mouth amazement when the lady said, “May I take him with me if I put him in a box?” Miss America Visited ASHEVILLE — Reporter David Lyle says that Asheville’s own Miss America, Maria Beale Fletcher, was home for a short visit recently. A parade was given in her honor after her arrival at the airport plus several parties and receptions. "Big Daddy" In NYC SHENANDOAH — “While the cat is away the mice will play.” —or so says Bill Pearman, anyway. In this case the “cat” is Bob “Big Daddy” Lips«omb who has been on vacation. When last seen he wa-s headed toward New York to visit his sister. Recent visitors at SHD were Don Britt, Terri Freeman of American Air lines, Mack Ohmart of the LYH weather bureau, and Pete Ginter of Lufthansa Airlines. Vacations and Weddings CINCINNATI-C — This word was sent by Jane Griffith: “Va cations and weddings never seem to come to an end in CVG. Peg Pequignot is anxiously awaiting her trip to Las Vegas to attend the Interline Christmas Party. Kathy Feldman spent part of her holidays in Atlanta and yours truly spent a weekend in New York window shopping on Fifth Avenue. Joan Schnieders is in a furor making plans for her wedding January 20. “Ed Laskowski and Ed Wisnieski gave a spook party with most everyone attired in a Halloween costume. If prizes had been awarded we would have had several in first place. We are struggling for fourth place in the women’s bowling league. We are happy to see such determination with one of our bowlers—Debbie Petrey—who raised her average 20 pins last month.” Reserves Keep Them Busy FAYETTEVILLE — FAY is a busy place these days, says Bob Bennington, with the Reserves reporting to Fort Bragg for their one-year tour of duty. Most of them are from the New England states, accounting for the heavy load on Flight 27 Friday after noons. Plans are in the works there for a “bigger and better than ever” Christmas party. 10 YEARS SERVICE Dennis W. McGuire, Inspectr., INT, November 5 Arnold M. Ward, Asst. Chf. Res.
