JULY, 1963 THE PIEDMONITOR PAGE THREE From Foundations . . . To Walls . . To Finish . . . Engine Shop Completed, Occupied The Engine Overhaul Shop has been one of the few facilities within Pied mont Aviation which since its start has not had its quarters changed or modern ized in some way. It was originally housed in a small lean-to at one of the fixed base hangars at Winston-Salem. That was 22 years ago. As more work piled in more space was needed, so the shop became a whole series of lean-tos connected with the original area. Conditions became more and more crowded until men were work ing elbow to elbow, though still managing to perform competent, professional jobs. Then, following a Board of Directors meeting in the spring of 1962, it was announced that work would soon begin on an entirely new engine shop, 100 feet by 200 feet. At last the men could get their elbows out of each other’s faces. Work started on the new facility last fall. The interior was completed in late spring and the moving process has been underway for several weeks. While most departments are in the new quarters and successfully in operation, there’s still some settling down and finishing up to do. The old Engine Shop by the hangar will still be put to use by Piedmont, pri marily as a storage area for extra engines and parts. The people who work in and for the shop are of the opinion that what extra space there is now will be completely occupied within the next five years, both with extra business and the extra peopfe needed to handle it. Before After I In the old quarters, Superintendent of Engine Overhaul C. W. Bryant shared this office with the secre tary, whose desk is in the fore ground. Installed in his brand-new office, Bryant consults with his secretary, Mrs. Elizabeth Brendle. An ante room by the office has space for Mrs. Brendle's desk and shop files and records. Before any equipment was moved in, the new Engine Shop had what appeared to be an endless stretch of interior. This photograph was taken shortly before the go-ahead was given to start the move. Looking a bit smaller, the shop in terior was rapidly filled with en gine parts and equipment. Located across from the home office build ing at INT, the shop also boasts a new break room and work space on a higher level overlooking the main area. Frank Curtis demonstrates how it was to work in the Plating Depart ment of the old shop. As can be seen from the pictures, the quarters were crowded and dirty. Providing a spacious contrast to the old lean-to, (left to right) M. J. Cig- iano, Arthur Lawson, and H. W. Gordon work in the Assembly De partment. mm m if
