In Response to Questions VFR with Turby I am writing this a little before the deadline for a change, as I will be on vacation when the deadline occurs. Was sorry to learn Delores Duff, Agent LYH, is in the hos pital. Those wishing to send cards may address them to Lynch burg General Hospital. Congratulations go to FAY and gang on a fine job of board ing thirty-eight passengers on second section of 805, which was to be a ferry trip back to ATL on Sunday, August 18. My recent visit to FAY was a most enjoyable one. Sorry I didn’t get to attend the BLF Dinner the other night, but will be there for the next one. DCA had eight inches of water in North Terminal recently The passengers tied their shoes around their necks, rolled up their pant legs (men passengers—that is) and women just took off their shoes and kept going to the airplanes. Instead of tugs on the ramp, row boats were in order. Daydreams at the steering wheel may lead to nightmares in the hospital. If your foot slips, you may recover your balance. If your tongue slips, you cannot recall your words. Many a man grows sage, after sowing wild oats. All's Well With Richard Mend Almost two years ago an arti cle appeared in The Piedmonitor about a Los Angeles boy who had become Piedmont’s “Num ber One Fan.” The youngster had written several letters to Pubhcations Editor Cleta Covington (at that time Cleta Marshall) in which he described his admiration for Piedmont and all things aeronau- A brand-new nephew tical. One letter in the article quoted Richard Mend as saying; “I know my class is going to love the things you sent me almost as much as I do. Thank you. again. I love your airline very much.” Since then many Piedmont people have inquired about Rich ard, wanting to know where he was and what he’s doing now. In response to their questions we recently asked Richard to bring us up to date. Here is what he wrote: “Dear Mrs. Covington, “How are you? I am very glad to tell you that I received your letter and The Piedmonitor. “. . . I am attending summer school (subject, aviation) for the first six weeks of this summer. Then I will be at Catalina Island for the rest of the summer. I like to skin-dive a lot, and Cata lina Island is a great place to skin-dive. It is 26 miles off the Los Angeles coast. In my own words, ‘It is beautiful.’ Well, that’s about all there is as far as my activities go. “I am still interested in avia tion, now more than ever! “I think I forgot to tell you in my last letter that I became f" m f, ^ : 41 Richard with Piedmont F-27 an Uncle. My nephew’s name is Paul Neal Mend. He is my broth er’s child. I will send you some pictures of him too. “Well, that’s about all I have to say. I hope I hear from you soon. Say hello to everybody for me. Thank you for everything. From your fan, Richard T. Mend” And that’s the latest on Pied mont’s “Number One Fan,” one of the most enthusiastic boosters an airline ever had. B. N. Evans, GSB 1 J. K. Gray, INT 1 D. L. Odum, Capt., ORF 1 T. E. M. Shanks and Mr. R. W. Pendle ton of your Washington opera tion. On May 15, the Communica tions Products Department was honored by a visit to our Lynch burg, Va., facilities by Admiral M. E. Curts, Department of De fense, and quite naturally, we were desirous of providing him with the V. I. P. treatment. Through arrangement with the above-mentioned individuals, we were able to preboard the Admi ral on the flight and I feel cer tain that he was as much im pressed with this as I was. The courtesy extended at the counter and the excellent flight all con tributed to a very successful stay at Lynchburg. Once again my sincerest thanks. Sincerely, R. J. D. Washington, D. C. Dear Sir; I called to make my reserva tions and asked the clerk if they served lunch and she said very emphatically that they did. After I had boarded the plane and asked the steward to be served lunch, I was told they did not serve lunch. I exploded. Being a diabetic I have to eat on time and have the right kind of food. While on board I went to the restroom . . . and attempted to wash my hands but there was no water. I called the steward about it and he didn’t under stand why there was no water on board as the plane was sup posed to have been serviced properly before take-off. He in turn brought me two glasses of water. . . to wash my hands. We landed at Myrtle Beach then Florence and Columbia. I again went to the rest room and attempted to wash my hands, and still no water. In conclusion I wish to say with today’s competition, it is important for a firm of your type to be on the ball and have proper inspection and serve lunch during mealtimes. Never have I been on an airline yet from 11:30-12:00 to 12:30 that I wasn’t served lunch. Dear Sir: Today, Mr. Bob Gilley, ticket agent at Friendship Baltimore, Md., went beyond the call of duty to make certain I caught my plane. I had arrived some three hours before take-off for my flight to Washington, and Greensboro-Winston-Salem, and had taken a room at the term inal in order to do a little paper work. Mr. Gilley came to iny room 20 minutes before flight time to make sure I was awake. I have traveled for a number of years and while airline em ployees are normally, or ‘shall we say usually, courteous, I think this gentleman was more, much more, than courteous. I would like to extend my thanks to Mr. Gilley and Pied mont Airlines. Sincerely, T. F. G. Kernersville, N. C. Dear Sir: This is the fifth year we have vacationed on Ocracoke Island, N. C., and your Mr. Joe Wathen has taken care of us in such a kind, courteous and efficient way, I feel impelled to congra tulate you on having him as your representative. He has certainly made us friends of Piedmont. Also, may I add, that we have found all Jackie Hutcherson, DCA 6 J. F. Jackson, ROA 6 E. L. Jayne, DAN 6 P. F. Pitts, INT-FB 6 G. M. Smith, ISO 6 S. B.
