VFR with Turby Piedmont has always been at the top of the local service car riers when it comes to collecting excess baggage and now I know why. Picture this: ATL opens at 0500. The maid cleaned back of our ticket counter during the night and rolled up the rug that the agents stand on and placed it on the baggage scales to mop the floor, forgetting to place it back on the floor. Jane Kinsey was called to the counter shortly after her arrival at the office and found a passenger ready to check in to MBC. He presented an Air Travel Card. She looked at the scales and saw a rug and bag, and excess baggage was charged. So to be accommodating, she went back into the office, got some twine, tied the rug, and placed the MBC tag on rug and bag. Needless to say the rug and bag arrived MBC ok, but the rug was not claimed. ATL now has their rug back and nailed to the floor. Jane, we give you E for effort anyway. Looks like we’re going to bust the quota to little bits this month. With continued good weather and hard work, we should be able to hit close to 85,000. That’s a mess of passengers and mili tary stand-by’s. With all this, the on-time operations should be about the best yet. Congratulations to everyone on your efforts to keep ’em on schedule. We hear that Captain Harold Brown, recently retired, is re covering nicely from a recent operation. Harold, I’m sure you still get THE PIEDMONITOR, so we wish you the best of luck. S. C. gave Bob McAlphin a going-away party one Monday afternoon and they kindly invited me to attend, which of course I did. Enjoyed coffee, cake and stuff like that. Bob received as a gift from the group a nice attache case. WOMAN’S TEARS — World’s greatest water power. VOLCANO — A sick mountain. tact — Letting people know what you mean with out saying it. Pilots Aid Sky-Bound Cadets J Piedmont First Officer Curtis Ivey (seated right) checks over details of the sponsorship of Squadron II of the Atlanta Civil Air Patrol Cadets with Capt. Oel Futrell of Eastern, Chairman of the Atlanta ALPA Inter line Committee. Helping with the plans are (left to right) Lt. Col. Eugene C. Noland, Squadron Commander, Cadet 1st Lt. Johnny Canup, and Maj. Octavio Jordan, U. S. Air Force—CAP Liaison Officer for the Georgia Wing, CAP. Although Piedmont’s Atlanta- based pilots are small in number and a late addition to that city’s aviation community, they have fast made themselves a force for good, as evidenced by their la test project as leaders in encour aging the 650 other Atlanta-bas ed airline pilots to assume spon sorship of the local Civil Air Pa trol (CAP) Cadet Unit. Through the Air Line Pilots Association (ALPA) and by in dividual effort, various projects and charities have previously been supported, but the CAP sponsorship marks the first time such an undertaking has been attempted on an interline basis. The idea of an airline pilot- sponsored CAP Cadet squadron was brought to the attention of Piedmont ALPA Council officers by First Officer Curtis Ivey, who has worked in the Cadet pro gram several years. Ivey’s argument to the Pied mont, Eastern, Delta, and South ern pilot groups was that “.... the purpose and aims of the Ci vil Air Patrol Cadet Program are so closely allied with the interest of the pilot’s profession that the program is a moral as well as a (Continued on Page Six) eMoflfl4f liiniUAcufl Seat Belts Can Save Your Life; Jaycees Offer Them Wfiolesale Many people could be saved from death each year if only they would wear seat belts for all trips by car — even the short runs “just to the supermarket.” It’s obvious that wearing seat belts makes good sense, and the Winston-Salem Junior Chamber of Commerce is launching a drive to make it easy for every one to own them. They may be purchased, start ing November 1, at wholesale prices of $3.50 a set. Piedmont’s Jaycee representative will be Bill Work, IFB, and anyone in Piedmont’s system may send their money and orders for seat belts to him. President T. H. Davis has add ed his endorsement to the drive, saying, “Factual statistics prove automobile seat belts have saved many lives. This is a most com mendable project.” Airline type or metal-to-metal belts will be sold, in black, red, blue, green, brown, and grey. Other colors are available but will have to be specially ordered. The belts must be installed, of course, and for buyers in the Winston-Salem area, local gara ges and service stations are of fering a special installation price of $1.50 per seat. Discount from DCA Another Washington hotel has extended a special discount rate to all Piedmont personnel. According to District Sales Manager O. E. “Bud” Halsey, the Carroll Arms Hotel in the Capi tol Hill area has offered all Pied mont guests a special rate of $5 per person. Those using the rate should identify themselves as airline personnel with proper identification. Patsy Benton, F.A., INT 1 J. N. Browne, INT-A 1 Theresa Clark, DCA 1 D. N. Graver, INT 1 D. E.
