Hot Springs, Virginia becomes a new member of the Pied
mont Family on April 4. 1 believe it will have the distinction of
being the highest airport in the Eastern USA, taking that honor
away from BLF. It’s a beautiful setting for an airport ■— it’s out
on top of everything — like standing on the deck of an aircraft
carrier — you can look in all directions and see nothing but sky.
Congratulations and best wishes go out to the recent promo
tions of Managers — Hank Eisenbath-BAL, C. R. Blackmon-LYH,
and Bob Turbiville-RDU.
The ground hog saw his shadow the other day, so it looks like
six more weeks of winter. Now, I don’t put much faith in Mr.
Waodchuck, but let me tell you what I do put my chips on when
it comes to long range forecasting — that’s the “woolly worm” in
the fall. If he’s black all over, look out —rough winter; if he’s
brown all over, we should have a mild winter. This last fall, he
was black on both ends and brown in the middle, which means
rough first part of winter, normal in middle and rough again last
part. Now, you just watch the ole “woolly worm” if you want a
long range forecast.
Jack Brandon-INT Station Manager, is recuperating at home
from an operation. I am not at liberty to divulge the nature of
this ordeal, but I can say it was not a tonsillectomy or appendec
tomy — you will have to use your own imagination. Nevertheless
he is doing fine.
Let’s carry that “miUion passengers” this year and become a
member of the “Million Air Club.”
HARD TIMES — When hitchhikers are willing to go either way.
THE PIEDMONT
POSTMAN
Dear Sir:
Too often we hear from our
customers only when they have
a complaint to file; this, how
ever, is an opposite note.
Although I fly Piedmont fre
quently, it wasn’t until this
week that I had the pleasure of
flying with one of your new
hostesses as a cabin attendant. I
certainly would like to commend
your training program and your
selection of young ladies. The
Stewardess aboard the flight
from Pulaski to Cincinnati, Miss
Ramsey, was both efficient and
hospitable. She appeared to take
a personal interest in seeing
that her passengers were com
fortable.
Continuing my flight to Chi
cago aboard another airline with
three Stewardesses aboard the
plane, it was my impression that
your Miss Ramsey was superior
to any of the three. I assume
that this young lady is represen
tative of your corps of Steward
esses. If so, you are certainly do
ing a superior job to that of oth
er airlines I travel. Congratu
lations.
Sincerely,
D. J. R.
Pulaski, Va.
Dear Sir:
I call to your attention the
conduct of your Agents. He was
the only one on duty at the time.
My wife and four-year-old
child were attempting, Christ
mas night, to catch one of your
flights. He insisted on taking
people out of turn, by-passing
my wife, who had to stand aside
to rest against the counter, in
asmuch as she is seven months
pregnant. When I protested this
treatment of my wife, he inform
ed me that he “could not run
up and down the counter.”
My wife barely made the
plane. When she arrived in Roa
noke, she learned that your
Agent had routed her luggage
through ... (to another city).
To make matters worse, she was
going ... (to her destination)
to attend a funeral.
In review of the public em
barrassment and inconvenience
my family suffered, I expect a
rebate on this ticket.
Sincerely,
W. E. S.
Dear Sir:
I am writing to commend your
company for the excellent co
operation and wonderful service

Statistics Give Employee Profile
On the average this worker is
more likely to be a male than
a female. He’s young — only 32
years old — and something of a
pioneer, since he started with a
new company and stuck by it.
Who is he? The average Pied
mont employee.
He's hard-working . . .
These conclusions, based on
recent figures supplied by the
Personnel Department, reveal
some interesting things about
the ages of Piedmont employ
ees and their length of service
with the company.
At the time of the survey
there were 1,732 employees list
ed with the company. Of these,
824, or close to half, have been
with Piedmont five or more
years, and of this number, 469
have served ten or more years.
Cutting it even finer, out of
the 469, 144 have served 15 or
more years, and of that group 15
have entered the “diamond-pin
circle” of employees who have
been with Piedmont 20 years or
longer.
As in any group, there are several,
Piedmont employees who are at the
top of the scale as far as age goes, and
some who are at the bottom. The aver
age age, however, is 32.1 years, with
an average length of service of nearly
six years.
There are 55 people who are 50
years or more old, representing about
three per cent of the work force. Then
there are the 126 employees who are
the “babies” of the group with ages of
21 years or under.
Standing at the head of the line are
two employees who are over 60 years
old. Were they of the feminine gender
t’would not be very gallant
to give their names, but
perhaps Edwin Kirk, Chief
Mechanic at SDF, and E. G.
young
W16W0NT
and loyal
Warner, Senior Specialist at
INT-FB, will not mind if their
ages of 62 and 65, respectively,
are published. Kirk has been
with Piedmont 14 years, and
Warner 20 years. Our respects,
gentlemen.
Add all the figures up and you
get a picture of a young man or
woman who’s been with the
company over five years, and
who has a good chance of stay
ing even longer.
They’re loyal, and undeniably
hard-working. If they weren’t.
Piedmont Airlines would never
have been able to pass its 16th
anniversary February 20.
And — though it really doesn’t
prove anything — this average
employee might be one of 27
named Smith, 24 named John
son, 15 named Brown, 14 named
Miller, 13 named Davis, 13 nam
ed Martin, 10 named Jones, or 10
named Wilson.
