VFR with Turby I wish to thank everyone for the fine job that made the first half of the year the greatest in our history from a traffic-produ cing standpoint. When I say everyone, I mean all departments and it takes the full cooperation of all departments to get the main job done — that is, to put the passengers and cargo on the air- planes and get them there on time. You know, it’s a “Million or More in ’64” .— well, for the record, as of June 30, we have passed the half-way mark in time, and we are a little over in the number of passengers — to be exact, 505,080. If we can continue the same pace for the last half we will have that “Million or More in ’64.” It is with regret that we had to say farewell recently to a fine gal and a long trusted employee. She was no other than Lib Lance, our receptionist and switchboard operator. For 13 years, she met the public in her job with the same smile and pleasant voice for everyone. She was always the same —■ not only will we miss her, but our good customers will also. We understand that Ed Laskowski—CVG-F, Jim Dallas—SHD, and Pete Sandifer—ILM, are well on the recovery list from their recent illnesses. All of the recent winners of the passenger boarding contest did an outstanding job, and I congratulate you all; however, I would like to pay special tribute to Don Shanks and his DCA gang for winning with a big handicap. As you know. Flight 60 operates DCA-BAL mainly to get in position or originate 63 BAL-ATL, and it operates at a very early hour when there is no traffic demand. Even with this handicap, they still increased theii; boardings over 10 per cent per departure. WIT — The salt of conversation — not the meat. GOSSIP — When nobody don’t do nothing, and somebody goes and tells about it. THE PIEDMONT POSTMAN (Editor’s note: Richard Mend is a California youngster wlio through his letters and interest has become one of Piedmont’s staunchest fans. Employees fre quently ask about Richard, and in response to their requests this latest letter from him is published.) Dear Mrs. Covington: ... I am glad to hear that I have so many friends at Pied mont Airlines. You mentioned that everyone has been asking how I was getting along in school, and had asked if I would bring you up to date. I am now at tending high school in Los Angeles. I am in the tenth grade. I am get- t i n g good grades. I pass ed my ten-week test with an A in Algebra, A- minus in World Nephew Paul Mend History, B in Spanish, C in Eng lish, A-minus in Biology, and a B-plus in American Literature. This summer I will be taking another course in Aviation for six weeks. Then I will be going to Catalina Island for the rest of the summer. I am sending you a couple of photos of my nephew. He is starting to talk a little now. He is about a year and a half old. He is running all over the place and is hard to look after. But after all, he is a lot of fun! Well, that is about all I have to say for now. Thank you so much for every thing. Sincerely, Richard T. Mend. Los Angeles, Calif. jjt % Dear Sir: . . . On Friday morning before 8 a.m., in order to be certain our reservations were O.K., at my expense, I phoned long distance (Continued on Page Six) Three Years, 30,000 Miles A/leef Shari-Liffle Junior Birdgirl (Editor’s Note: The following is reprinted by special permis sion from the INT Journal and Sentinel) by Lil Thompson Staff Reporter Shari Folger, who’s flown thousands and thousands of miles, dumped the contents of her tiny pocketbook on the liv ing room floor and explained what happens when you ride in an airplane. “You sit,” said Shari. “You fasten your seat belt. And that’s all.” Shari, who turned three yes terday, should know. She’s flown more than 30,000 miles which boils down to about 10,000 for each year she’s been around. There’s a reason, of course, for this impressive total. Shari’s father, Sherley Folger, is Assis tant (Jeneral Sales Manager for Piedmont Aviation, Inc., and he and his wife and Shari, who live at 2890 Marguerite Drive, have what amounts to free air trans portation in this country. Many Flights Shari’s 30,000 air miles include three transcontinental flights; a trip to Florida and one to Mem phis. Along with shorter trips, they all add up to 36 flights. It’s been Mr. Folger who’s been keeping this log. Shari is a little foggy about her flight record. Closely examining a red bot tle cap which she keeps in her pocketbook, she said, for ex ample, that she remembered her very first flight. This would seem doubtful, however, in view of the fact that her first flight—from Wash ington, D. C., to Lexington, Ky.— was made when she was six weeks old. Shari is sure of some things, though. ' She knows what happens right before a flight. “When you get your coats on k m Little Miss Shari Folger exhibits her best "welcome abroad" smile to go with the Stewardess hat donned for the occasion. Could it be that by 1982 she'll be wearing it for real? you go on airplanes, see?” And she’s observed what takes place as the plane becomes air borne: “The feet comes back up in the hole.” (Or, as her father puts it, “The wheels retract up to the wings.”) Once aboard and seated, Shari carefully fastens her seat belt. Then she chews the gum the Stewardess has given her. “I don’t smoke any cigarettes, though,” says Shari. Sometimes there is important business to take care of. Sometimes, she goes up front and confers with the captain. And sometimes she helps the Stewardess pass out the chew ing gum, but mostly, says her mother, she sits quietly. Visits Grandparents Grandparents, Mrs. Folger ex plained, account for Shari’s three transcontinental flights. All have been to Montana, where one set of grandparents live in Lewistown, near Billings. The second set of grand parents, formerly of Lexington, Ky., but who now live in Wash ington, account for most of the shorter trips. Shari’s last flight, on May 11, took her to Washington. Her next? The seasoned air travelei talked about it as she replaced the contents of her pocketbook and retired to the driveway to ride her trike. Grounded Now She would fly again “next week,” she said. But what Shari doesn’t know is that she’s currently grounded. She’s going to get a brother or a sister next month and the doctor says no more flying for her mother for a while, and that means Shari, too. But where will she go when she does fly again? “Somewhere!” cried Shari as she turned her trike around and pedaled furiously up the drive way. liiniUdcufA — Rachel Alley, INT-F 1 Sherley Brown, Mgr., Space Contrl., INT 1 C.
