Definitely in the record breaking business, Piedmont’s
latest, and by no means least, accomplishment was setting
the speed record for twinjet transports.
On the occasion of the delivery flight of the first
Boeing 737, Piedmont flew a great circle route from
Seattle, Washington to Wilmington, North Carohna, a total
of 2,501 miles, in four hours and 47 minutes.
The average speed was 504 miles per hour and
Piedmont’s newest jet landed at Wilmington with 6,300
pounds of reserve fuel.
The first half of the flight was flown at an average
altitude of 35,000 feet and 33,000 feet the last half.
long day’s trip President Davis,
Vice Presidents Saunders and
Northington deplaned to be met
by their smiling daughters with
lots of red roses.
Captain L. W. McNames reported
no appreciable wind from Seattle
to the Chicago area. At Chicago
the plane picked up a 50-knot tail
wind.
A large crowd was on hand in
Wilmington to meet the first of
Piedmont’s very own jets. Mayor
0. 0. Allsbrook extended a warm
welcome to President Davis and
Piedmont on behalf of his city.
Refueling was next on the agenda
and then the Piedmont Pacemaker
was off again. This time headed for
home and an enthusiastic greeting
in Winston-Salem.
