PAGE TWO THE PIE TO N I T 0 R ^PRIL, 1969 me pieamoniTOK Piedmont Aviation, Inc. Smith Reynolds Airport Winston-Salem, N. C. Betsy Allen, Editor r /A Ml III] Editorial A WEEK'S MAIL A gloomy day is not always the best to choose to open a stack of inflight letters from our passen gers. At least as we approached the task, that was our feeling. However, after exposing the contents of some 73 notes from the people who flew the Pace makers last week we were quite pleased. Out of those 73 only one had absolutely nothing nice to say about Piedmont. Along with the unhappy man from FLO there were 16 others who offered suggestions for improv ing our services, but most of those liked at least some of the things we do. Then there were the happy 57 other passengers that had only the nicest comments about Piedmont’s service and employees. Of course it is always pleasant to hear nice things, but we realize we’re far from perfect and those un happy passengers are a big help to us when we are looldng for ways to improve, which we always are. Their letters are frequently entertaining, like the one from a newspaper man in New York who flew with us from Wilmington to Washington. He remarked that his flight crew was “very efficient, except for a stewardess who spilled her popcorn on the terminal floor.” He went on to say that our ashtrays wouldn’t pass an “Avis test” but that he was most appreciative of our Southern Belle stewardesses. He didn’t mind too much that his flight was late, causing him to miss the last shuttle back to New York even though he was stuck with six pounds of tasty Carolina shad des tined for his home freezer. His closing comment was “Just wait until Charlie the Tuna hears about this.” A gentleman from Montgomery, Alabama had lots of kind words for Charlotte ticket agent Penny Combs. Flight stewardesses Couch and Nightingale did an outstanding job on Flight 30 from Atlanta to Fayette ville on the 19th several of their passengers reported. A gentleman from Richmond said, “I’m sure it is not corporate policy to stay a small and friendly air- Une, but try to keep the friendly part. You do an ex cellent job.” Another Virginia gentleman from Virginia Beach was impressed with the “helpful and informative com ments” of Captain Ed Thurber on Fhght 42. There were numerous other very nice to know things about Piedmont people all over the system. As we flnished tallying up the week’s passenger letters we decided it was an excellent way to brighten up a rainy afternoon. LOST - ONE POUND CAKE Station Manager Jack Brandon sent us the follow ing note about “Things of Interest at INT-F”; We always attempt to get information, as com plete as possible, in connection with lost articles. Recently a passenger left a pound cake, un checked, in the overhead rack of one of our trips. The agent receiving this information by telephone did get complete details. Listed below is the distinctive con tents list taken from the PA T 240. Distinctive Contents (use chart as guide) 1. Flour, 2. Sugar, 3. Butter, 4. Eggs, 5. V. Flavoring Incidentally, the cake was found by CVGFF, re turned and picked up by the passenger. No doubt complete information on this report has merit. Around The System NEW EMPLOYEES E. R. They had less absenteeism than any other station (with ten agents or more) on the system. The company wishes to thank all of you at SHD for your splendid cooperation and dedication to your job. Since this seems to ^ the “pat-on-the-back” column this issue, I should also like to comme ^ Leonard Martin and his fine contingent for an outstanding on-tim' record at his station — 140 consecutive departures without a delay. They say as you get older, you are inclined to reminisce. Well, I was going through some old files the other day and found the following. On March 7, 1949 (some twenty years ago), this is where some people were that you all know: AVL — Bill Clark and Roy Caldwell CRW — Walt Ryczek and Frank Perry CVG — Tom Cowen, Pete Jones and Ed Laskowski EWN - Chester Nutt ILM — Don Edmondson and Dick Mahn INT — Johnny Lewis and Bill Wooten LEX — Jim Neill RDU — K.
