THE PRINCIPAL OF INTEREST
Every now and then it is good to think about in
terest — the kind we get paid for the use of our money.
And the same kind we have to pay when we use some
one else’s money.
Never before has there been such a widespread
interest in “interest”. Up until a decade ago, interest
was very definitely a secondary factor in the borrowing
and lending of money. Not so today. The interest rate
is all-important — often being blown up far out of
proportion to its real importance, especially by small
savers.
To put this thing into better perspective, a short
time ago we heard a young man say: “A Savings Bond
is a poor investment because the interest rate is 4.15
per cent on bonds, and my Savings Institution is paying
4.4 per cent.” He was branding Savings Bonds a poor
investment because of a one quarter of one per cent
differential.
First, let’s make a distinction here. If you are
among the financially affluent with $100,000 to invest,
a quarter of a per cent is quite important to you. But
if you are the average wage-earner who manages to
scrape together $20 a month to put in savings, you can
forget about that extra quarter of a per cent. It’ll bring
you a nickel more of interest — on one month’s savings
for a whole year.
Is all this scrambling for an extra nickel worth the
effort to the small saver? Obviously not. Of far more
value to him is the automatic saving device known as
Payroll Savings Plan.
Another factor too often overlooked is the income
tax angle. Here, large investors and small savers alike
can benefit. Savings Bonds provide two tax advantages.
First, the interest is not subject to State and local in
come taxes. And with Series E Bonds, which are bought
at a discount and increase in value to final maturity,
reporting of interest for Federal taxes may be deferred
as long as the bonds are held and drawing interest.
Just what does tax deferment mean in dollars and
cents? Well, two things. First, with most investments,
the interest is taxed currently. Should you be in the 25
per cent tax bracket, for example, you would have to
pay in taxes each year $25 out of every $100 of interest
earned. But with Series E Bonds, you retain this $25
until a later date, and it continues to earn more interest.
Then, secondly, when you do get ready to cash
your bonds, you can almost choose the time that is to
your best advantage. Many people will never have to
pay income tax on their bonds, for they will use them
in retirement when their income is very low.
There are lots of good things to say about Savings
Bonds; they are safe, among the safest investments in
the world. They are not subject to market fluctuation
and both principal and interest are fully guaranteed.
In buying bonds you become a shareholder in our
country’s future. It is an excellent way to stand up for
America and attest to your patriotism.
Bonds are an investment in the soundness of the
dollar. Savings Bond dollars come off the money market
and rather than contributing to inflation they actually
serve to slow it down, a point well worth pondering,
especially now.
Piedmont’s Bond campaign will run from June
23rd to the 27th this year. Consider the benefits of
starting your personal Bond buying program and then
do it. Now is the time.
