Charleston Service
Is Inaugurated On
April 26 Schedule
Charleston, South Carolina wel
comed Piedmont to the city and
surrounding area effective Sunday,
April 26, with the inauguration of
two northbound and two southbound
flights. CHS became the 80th city
on Piedmont’s system.
President T. H. Davis said that
the inauguration of scheduled ser
vice “represents the culmination
of years of effort by Piedmont and
the city of Charleston to provide
this much needed air service.”
Piedmont’s application for the
route was filed with the Civil Aero
nautics Board on June 16, 1967.
Davis said that initially service
will be provided with the FH227
and the Nihon YS-11 aircraft.
The newly-appointed station man
ager for Piedmont in Charleston is
Stephen B. Boykin.
Sales activity in the Charleston
area will be the responsibility of
Don Edmondson, district sales
manager for Piedmont based in
Atlanta.
In commemoration of the in
augural of scheduled service Pied
mont officials hosted a reception
for over 150 Charleston area busi
ness and civic leaders, representa
tives of the military, and many
others at the Francis Marion Hotel.
During the occasion Piedmont’s
President Davis presented Mayor
Gaillard of Charleston with a
unique “giant” key chain from the
mayors of those cities receiving
direct service by Piedmont to and
from Charleston.
Stockholders Elect Galloway;
Long Promoted To Controller
The annual meeting of stockhold
ers of Piedmont Aviation, Inc. was
held in Winston-Salem, N. C. on
April 15, at which time all of the
present directors of Piedmont were
re-elected, and a new member of
the board of directors was added..
The new director is Alex H. Gallo
way, chairman and president of
R. J. Reynolds Tobacco Company
in Winston-Salem.
President T. H. Davis told the
shareholders that the 1969 loss of
$1,856,616 was primarily caused by
the 30-day strike called by the Air
Line Pilots Association during the
peak traffic season of the year.
In a meeting of the board of
directors following the annual
meeting, the company’s directors
elected Audree Long, formerly
assistant controller, to controller
of the Company. The following
officers were re-elected: T. H.
Davis, president and treasurer; C.
G. Brown, Jr., H. K. Saunders, R.
A. H. GALLOWAY
New Director
S. Northington, senior vice presi
dents; T. W. Morton, vice presi-
dent-finance and secretary; W. W.
Barber, vice president-purchasing;
H. M. Cartwright, vice president-

G. McGee, vice president-sales; K.
E. Ross, assistant vice president-
traffic; W. 0. Tadlock, assistant
vice president-flight operations; R.
E. Turbiville, assistant vice presi
dent; J. R. Farley, assistant secre
tary; and Mrs. R. M. Gregg, as
sistant secretary.
Davis expressed cautious opti
mism to the shareholders for the
current year. He pointed out that
Piedmont now has a fleet of all
jet-powered aircraft available to
meet the requirements of an ex
panded route system and antici
pated traffic growth, and that re
cent favorable changes in fare
yields will mean substantially in
creased revenues.
Davis said that monthly in
creases during the first quarter in
revenue passenger miles flown and
revenue passengers carried have
been “encouraging”, adding that
they have been slightly above origi
nal forecasts for this historically
“soft” period of the year.
Those directors re-elected by the
shareholders are; President T. H.
Davis; Senior Vice Presidents C.
G. Brown, Jr., R. S. Northington
and H. K. Saunders; E. L. Davis,
Jr., John F. Watlington, Jr.,
