Johnnie Newell and his folks came in second only to Eastern. Like several other Pied
mont stations Charlotte has been setting boarding records one month and breaking
them the next. It's great to be back in the record breaking business!
In this series on the extra benefits of work
ing for Piedmont we’ve covered the average
dollar value of your “hidden paycheck” in
cluding the details of your various insurance
programs, your travel benefits and the re
cently revised pension plan.
Other Company benefits are not so easily
categorized because they are so diverse. For
example, as an employee you and your im
mediate family members have an opportunity
to save money at the Piedmont Credit Union.
You can borrow money at preferential in
terest rates, too. The Credit Union provides
its members with a safe and convenient fi
nancial institution. Savings are insured by
the National Credit Union Administration up
to $20,000. You may save through payroll
deduction or you may mail in your deposits.
Dividends are currently being paid quarterly
at the rate of six per cent per annum. The
Credit Union also provides life insurance on
your savings, up to $2500. This means that
for every dollar you have in your account,
your beneficiary, joint owner or estate will
receive an additional dollar, up to the maxi
mum $2500, in the event of your death.
Borrowing from the Credit Union is con
venient as well as reasonable. Loans are
repaid through payroll deductions. Life in
surance on your loans, up to a maximum of
$10,000, is provided at no additional cost
to you. Disability insurance on your loan
payments is optional and may be acquired for
a nominal fee.
To add to your recreational fun the Com
pany, to some extent, underwrites team
sports activities. Teams must be all employee
groups to qualify. The Company pays league
entry fees for bowling, basketball and soft
ball teams. The tab for uniforms for these
teams is also absorbed by the Company. Pied
mont further provides the trophies for the
Company golf tournament although there is
no financial support for individual sports. All
the recreational programs are administered
through the personnel office for the Company
Time off with pay includes everything
from vacations and holidays to specified on-
the-job meal and break periods. Each em
ployee is eligible for from one to four weeks
vacation a year. After one year’s employment
you are allowed two weeks vacation; after
eight years, three weeks and after 15 years,
four weeks. Vacation time is accrued from
July 1 to July 1. It must be taken from
January 1 to January 1.
Piedmont employees also receive nine paid
holidays during the calendar year. These
include New Year’s Day, Easter Monday or
Memorial Day, July 4th, Labor Day, Thanks
giving and the day after, Christmas Day,
your birthday and your employment anniver
For a personal emergency, defined as a
death in the immediate family, an employee
is granted up to three days off with pay.
In this instance immediate family includes
parents, spouses, mother and father in lawj
siblings and brothers and sisters.
As far as military obligations and time
off, reservists and National Guardsmen may
either take time off without pay or may use
vacation time for summer camp and/or re
Employees called for jury duty are given
time off with pay, less the jury fees. Any fees
above your cost of serving should be turned
in to the office of the Senior Vice President
and Secretary, INT-A.
Piedmont has a liberal formal policy on
sick leave for non-contract employees. The
guidelines for both short and long term disa
bility incidents were included in Part II of
this series covering insurance.
If free parking is not provided at the
various Piedmont locales the Company pays
up to $5 a month of any required parking
fees for employees.
For those employees who are required to
wear uniforms the Company either provides
the laundry service or pays a monthly clean
As the introduction to this benefits series
said, it is not possible to cover every question
that might come up about your Piedmont
benefits. If and when you do have a question
or a problem with some phase of your bene
fits program your best sources of detailed
information are your supervisor, your bene
fits booklets (available through Mrs. Spain-
hour, INT-A) and the Standard Practices
If you have missed one or several of these
articles in the Piedmonitor and would like to
have extra copies, drop us a note (INT-ZY)
and we’ll be glad to send them to you.
