CALIf: iSvCTORV Mooetl €53-R1830-“92 - 9 ...2 0-42 A Plaque for company's archives The nameplate, at left, is from the DC-3 Piedmont is helping to restore for the North Carolina Museum of Life and Science in Durham. It will be mounted and, as a plaque, added to the Company’s archives. The airplane’s original Air Corps serial number was 41-20130. It was a C-53, manufactured by the Douglas Air craft Company, and completed on March 20, 1942. There were only 193 C-53s built. On August 1, 1949, after being flown as an Air Corps troop transport plane, it went to Western Air Lines and was modified to a DC-3. It was seven years later, January 12, 1956, that the plane was purchased by Piedmont and became N56V. Char lotte Aircraft had the plane from 1963 until 1978 when it was moved to Durham to be restored for the museum. This history of the plane will be engraved on a plaque to replace the original three by three inch nameplate on the right of the entranceway to the cockpit of Piedmont’s first Potomac Pacemaker. Progress pictures of the restoration project are on page six of this issue.
