March/April, 1979 page three Fredericksburg Interesting interlining New York Walt Disney World Spring is here — fun is near Spring is here and the perfect place to find lots of fun and plenty of excitement may be right in your own back yard, or perhaps your neighbors’. With the rising cost of travel abroad, we thought it might be appropriate to concentrate on some of the interesting and exciting places to visit on the Piedmont system. Here are a few ideas. There are many more and we plan to mention them in future issues of the Piedmonitor. See the Sunshine State One of Piedmont’s newer cities, Miami, is an intriguing destination full of exciting places to visit, all set in a sunny, breezy, tropical atmo sphere. After you escape the maze of highways surrounding the airport, you’ll have no trouble finding any of the numerous tourist attractions. You’ll want to visit the Seaquarium and meet Hugo and Lolita, two four-ton killer whales; and Flipper, the movie star. Not too far from the Seaquarium and within walking distance of beach, amusement and picnic areas is Crandon Park Zoo. Other places of interest in the Miami area include the Monkey Jungle, Parrot Jungle, Orchid Jungle, the Wax Museum, Treasure Is land and Vizcaya, a beautiful Italian palace. A short drive west of Miami is the Everglades National Park where you can ride an airboat and observe alligators, egrets and unusual wild life in natural surroundings. Along the way, you might want to explore a Miccosukee or Seminole Indian village. Your Florida vacation won’t be complete without a visit to the southern-most city in the United States — Key West. This scenic drive takes you across the famous Seven-Mile Bridge, which separates the Atlantic Ocean and the Gulf of Mexico, to the world’s finest fishing waters and beautiful beaches. You might want to stop at Flipper’s Sea School, Sea World’s Shark Institute, Coral Reef State Park or the Theatre of the Sea. And don’t forget to try the key lime pie. The newest addition to our route system, Tampa/St. Petersburg/Clearwater, offers ex quisite beaches and plenty of family entertain ment at Busch Gardens. Carry me back Virginia, with its sparkling Atlantic beaches, majestic Blue Ridge Mountains and historic towns, has something for everyone. See history come alive as you watch hundreds of costumed colonists demonstrate their crafts and serve traditional meals in Williamsburg, Virginia’s restored colonial capital. Nearby is Jamestown, where America began with the landing of the first permanent English settlers in 1607, and Yorktown, where Wash ington defeated Cornwallis in 1781. Other Civil War battlefield parks are located at Petersburg, Manassas, New Market, Richmond, Fredericks burg and Appomattox, where Lee surrendered to Grant. Don’t miss George Washington’s home. Mount Vernon, which overlooks the Potomac near Alexandria. Marvel at Thomas Jefferson’s mountaintop home, Monticello, in Charlottesville. View the tombs of Stonewall Jackson and Robert E. Lee in Lexington. Wind your way through the Blue Ridge Mountains on two of America’s most scenic highways, the Skyline Drive and the Blue Ridge Parkway. Leave history behind as you tour NASA’s Langley Field in Hampton, where you’ll see a moon rock, the Apollo 12 spacecraft and Alan Shephard’s Apollo 14 spacesuit. Visit nearby Norfolk’s Gardens-By-The-Sea and tour the world’s largest naval installation. Virginia Beach is excellent for swimming, surfing, boat ing and fishing. The Old Dominion also has two W T k I r ' § theme parks; Kings Dominion near Richmond, and The Old Country, Busch Gardens near Wil liamsburg. Boston is beautiful Boston, probably better known for its tea parties, is the home of Paul Revere and the famous North Church. Shop at world-renowned Quincy Market, stroll down the waterfront and eat at Anthony’s Pier 4. Keep your eyes open for witches as you tour Old Salem. Try the Big Apple New York has a variety of attractions. You might want to start with Miss America herself, the Statue of Liberty. Ferry boats leave the Bat tery every hour on the hour. Sail out and visit the lady. Go all the way up to her crown, 152 feet high, for a splendid view of the harbor and lower Manhattan. There’s also the Empire State Building, the World Trade Center, Wall Street, the United Nations, Rockefeller Center, Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts, Broadway, Radio City Music Hall, Madison Square Garden, Central Park, Chinatown, Greenwich Village, plus countless museums, art galleries, exquisite and unusual shops and fabulous restaurants. Of course, no trip to New York would be com plete without seeing the world-famous New York Yankees playing baseball at Yankee Stadium. Relax in Denver If the hustle and bustle of a city vacation isn’t your idea of a relaxing vacation, you might consider another of Piedmont’s newest destinations — Denver. When the last snow flake has melted, you’ll find it an ideal location for camping, horseback riding, hiking, trout fishing and big-game hunting. A great get- away-from-it-all vacation place. Other areas of interest on the Piedmont system include Louisville, home of the world- famous Kentucky Derby, scheduled this year for May 5th; and, of course, the capital of our nation, Washington, D.C., with all its monu ments, art galleries, institutes and historical museums.
