The Fourth Annual Airline Chih Cookoff featured Jala-Piedmont Chili made with buffalo meat and guaranteed to set off a fire alarm in anyone brave enough to take a bite. GSO-based flight attendants Patty Mabe, Peggy Bach, Pepper Cory, and Nancy Nuckles, and ORF- based First Officer John Williams represented Piedmont at the inter national event. Each of the 43 participating air lines concocted its own version of chili, and ingredients included (allegedly) meats such as goat, people & places Trula Scott, flight attendant base manager in Atlanta, has been nom inated to Who’s Who Among Out standing Young Women in America for 1983. She was nominated by a professor at Wingate College where she graduated in 1966. Scott has been with Piedmont for 17 years. * * * * chicken, and rattlesnake as well as every spice in the world. Ralph Grif fith, an INT-based captain, sup- phed Piedmont’s main ingredient, buffalo meat. In addition to the chili contest, representatives from each airline competed for Miss Chili Pepper and Mr. Hot Sauce. Williams was runner-up in the male category. The event took place at Marine- land in Los Angeles earlier this summer. **** ROA Station Memager Art Whit taker has been honored by the Vir ginia Aviation Commission as one of three outstanding Virginians who have made strong contribu tions to the advancement of avia tion in the state. He was honored for his “love of aviation, his contin ual promotion of aviation’s positive side, and his concern for those involved in aviation.” The presenta tion was made August 22 during the Virginia Aviation Conference. * * 4: Steve Muslin and Paul Blanton, both agents at GSO, recently com peted in the Great Yadkin River Race near Winston-Salem. The Piedmont Airlines team paddled its canoe down the 16 mile stretch of river, finishing first in a field of 286 participants. Their time — two hours and 37 minutes. The race was held to raise money for the American Cancer Society. ♦ ♦ * ♦ It’s easy to spot Janice Troutner, an agent at Res-INT, when she’s driving around town. Her Piedmont blue Datsun 280ZX now boasts a North Ccirolina license plate which reads “JET-PIED". * ♦ * ♦ Denise Blankenship, ATL-based captain, and her father, a captain for Eastern, recently particpated in the 17th Annual Smithsonian Fes tival of American Folklife spon sored by the Smithsonian Institute in Washington, D.C. The festival celebrated the 200th anniversary of manned flight. Blankenship and her father, the first father/ daughter pair in the industry, talked with visitors about occupa tions in the aviation field. **** The Service Pin Awards Banquet, scheduled for Tuesday, September 27, will be the largest banquet yet! More than 450 employees will be recognized at the annual reception and dinner. Honorees include one employee with 40 years; 45 with 35 years; 34 with 30 years; 50 with 25 years; 75 with 20 years; and 258 with 15 years. Twenty-nine retirees have also been invited to the function. The reception will begin at 6:30 p.m. followed by dinner and a new audiovisual program. ♦ ♦ ♦ * Lou Caamano, station supervisor at LAH. recently received a TOPS (Total Outstanding Passenger Serv ices) Award. Wlien a young child with a learn ing disability was stranded at the airport recently, Caamano took the child to his home for the night. The child had difficulty sleeping in a strange house and cried much of the night, requiring numerous calls to her parents for reassurance and much attention by Caamano and his wife. The Caamanos. who had just moved into a new house and were in the midst of unpacking, handled a difficult situation veiy well. ♦ * ♦ ♦ A group of 700 representatives of Sun Life Insurance Company toured the United States and Can ada recently, stopping in Roanoke for a two day visit. The travel agen cies, Safaris Tours and P.
