GSO maintenance facility to expand Mechanics at INT's engine build up and brake & wheel overhaul shops have something to look for ward to; a $6 million addition to our GSO maintenance facility that includes large areas for both shops with room to grow. "The 127,000-square foot addi tion will give us critically needed room to meet growth," Gordon Bethune, senior vice president - operations, said, “and we will be able to further expand the building if we decide to do so at a later date." The two-stoiy addition will be attached to the GSO maintenance facility and built where the parking lot in front of the facility is cur rently located. Both the 21,300- square foot engine build-up shop and the 16,577-square foot wheel and brake shop will be on the first floor. Also on the first floor will be a 20,000-square foot stock room and about 16,800 square feet of offices, breakroom, corridors and lavato ries. The second floor will have 52,875 square feet available for future use. The shops will be equipped with the latest technological equipment to handle the new CFM-56-3 engines for the 737-300. All of Piedmont’s engine build-up and brake & wheel overhaul main tenance will be in the new facility and all parts for both shops will be stored in the extensive stock room addition. Although no new hirings are projected for operating the shops in the new facility, 45 to 50 mechanics now working at INT will move to GSO. Engine build-up consists of building up engines for aircraft installation by installing such items as generators, starters, tub ing, fuel controls, gear boxes and wiring harnesses on them. The move to GSO will be especially effi cient for engine maintenance because most of Piedmont's engine changes are now made at GSO. All of the changes will be made there when the addition opens. Wheel & brake overhauling con sists of repairing and assembling wheels and brakes for our aircraft. Construction on the addition is expected to begin this fall and be completed by the end of next year. The addition will be built by the Greensboro - High Point Airport Authority and Piedmont will lease the facility similar to our present arrangement at GSO. ■ .» f -‘.5 „-1 ■ - - )7. - ... ^ '..a— '*^^111 gti —f « A half million cubic yards of dirt have been brought in at CUT to build up the area at the end of our concourse. The city will soon begin paving and preparing the ramp and taxiway for service. The work is being done at night so as not to courtesy Charlotte Observer interfere with our flight operations.
