Win at Rockingham
Gives Terry fast start
One plus one equaled three for
Terry Labonte and the Piedmont race
team March 2.
That’s when Labonte won the Good-
wrench 500 pole at the North Caro
lina Motor Speedway in Rockingham,
then dominated the race with a con
vincing victory—the first for the team
this year and the first win for an Olds-
mobile since 1980.
The pole and the win added up to
three "victories" for the team that
place it in excellent standing for the
1987 season. First, the pole qualified
Labonte for the 1987 Busch Clash, a
50-mile sprint between this year’s
pole winners that will kick off the new
season in February at Daytona Beach.
Second, the win ensured Labonte a
spot on the 1987 Winner's Circle, a
program that pays drivers additional
money for entering a race and can
easily exceed $150,000 in extra earn
ings for the season.
Third, the win qualified Labonte for
the 1987 running of The Winston, a
challenge race between previous year
race winners with one of the richest
purses on the NASCAR circuit.
"We accomplished some goals this
weekend that take a lot of pressure off
the rest of our season,’’ Labonte said
after the victory. "It’s always the first
pole and the first win that are the
hardest, and we’re thankful they came
in just the third race.”
Labonte is having his best start
ever, with a second-place finish at the
Daytona 500 to add to his win at
Rockingham. Total earnings for the
year have already reached $167,340
and he is second in the points
standings.
But what the performance also does
is help silence some critics who
thought the Piedmont team had un
dergone too many changes too soon,
with a new car and new crew chief all
at the start of the same season.
"We had confidence in the Olds-
mobile when we made the decision to
switch cars, and our performance is
proving us right," Labonte said. "The
team also has a lot of confidence in
each other, with everyone giving input
to decisions."
Instead of one crew chief, the team
has three who share responsibilities:
Steve Hmiel. Bob Labonte (Terry's
father) and Pete Wright. The result
has been quick, creative answers to
problems and strategies the team
faces.
At Rockingham, that team put to
gether one of the season’s best perfor
mances by any driver this year, as
Labonte set a track record of 146.348
m.p.h. to take the pole and then led
304 of the race’s 492 laps. During the
final third of the race, he was virtually
untouchable as he led 144 of the last
145 laps.
With a pole, a win, and accomplish
ments already made for next season,
it could continue to be a banner year
for Labonte and the Piedmont race
team — no matter how you add the
figures.
F/A helps in emergency
Stacey Hushman. flight attendant, DCA, put her training to good use
while flying as a passenger on another airline recently.
Hushman was on a flight preparing to land at DCA. But the landing
was aborted, and the captain announced that an indicator light had
signaled that the landing gear was not locked in position. An attempt
to force the gear down with an abrupt turn did not succeed, so the
aircraft headed toward Dulles where it would make a belly landing.
"I was summoned by one of the flight attendants who reviewed the
evacuation with me and the operation of the front galley door on the
727," Hushman said.
When the plane Anally landed, she moved to the exit, checked for
fire, then pulled the chute once the door was open. When the slide
inflated, she helped passengers quickly deplane, then helped direct
passengers once she was on the ground.
“Stacey played a major role in helping evacuate passengers in a safe,
orderly manner,’’ Tk-ula Scott, manager-inflight services, said. "She’s
someone Piedmont can be very proud of.’’
