Marlin brings talent,
experience to PI team
Piedmont's image as an aggressive competitor in the
skies is being promoted on ground level this year by a
new, aggressive driver with the Piedmont race team.
Sterling Marlin, NASCAR's Rookie of the Year in 1983,
is an exciting racer whose steady hands on the Piedmont
No. 44 Oldsmobile inaugurated the 1987 Winston Cup
season with a respectable showing in the Daytona 500.
Marlin was in the lead lap—and had already collected
bonus points for leading the race—when a clutch failed
with just 33 laps remaining.
"We definitely had a top five car,” the 29-year-old Mar
lin said recently at the team’s shop near Thomasville, NC.
"We were in sixth place and in perfect position to move
up further in the field. The car was feeling better than it
had all day, and then the clutch went out.”
It was the first time in Marlin’s racing career that he
had lost a clutch.
But if anything’s certain in the sport of high-speed auto
racing, it’s uncertainty. Perhaps no sport is as dependent
upon so many variables for victories often measured in
split seconds. From gas mileage to tire wear, from aero
dynamics to untimely accidents, the Winston Cup races
are a coordination of skill, strategy and luck.
Marlin has developed his skills since 1976 when he
started racing with a Chevy Nova in the NASCAR Late
Model Sportsman series, which uses cars slightly smaller
than the Winston Cup circuit. He drove at selected tracks
in the Southeast and, in 1980, switched to a Chevy Camaro
on the NASCAR Grand American tour. He won the pres
tigious Grand American TYack Championship in 1980,
1981, and 1982, and fans voted him the Most Popular
Driver in 1981. From 1976 through 1981 Marlin won an
impressive 47 races.
In 1983 Marlin started full-time on the Winston Cup
circuit and won Rookie of the Year driving a Pontiac
Grand Prix and a Chevy Monte Carlo. Then, from 1984 to
1985, he drove the Monte Carlo on a limited schedule.
“1 was getting experience,” Marlin said. ‘‘But I wanted
to run all the tracks, so Wayne King (business manager of
the Piedmont race team) and 1 got together—and here
1 am.”
According to Marlin, the Piedmont team has the talent
and resources to be highly competitive on both the super
speedways and short tracks. Besides all the equipment
being first-class, the dedication to becoming a winner is
evident throughout the team. In addition, he’s gotten a
lot of support from Piedmont race fans.
“The race team and Piedmont people have been just
super,” he said. “Everybody’s really behind the team.”
Those supporters include his wife, Paula, and six-year-
old son Steadman, who live in Columbia, Tfenn., where
Marlin was born and raised on a cattle and tobacco farm.
In addition. Marlin’s parents live in Columbia and his
father, Clifton “Coo Coo” Marlin, raced on the Winston
Cup from 1970 to 1980.
Goals for the team this year include winning a pole
position, which would qualify Marlin for the 1988 Busch
Clash, and of course, winning at least one race which
would qualify him for the lucrative Winners Circle pro
gram and The Winston.
“We’re going to work hard and hopefully bring back a
trophy for all the Piedmont employees soon,” Marlin said.
“Just let them know that we appreciate their interest and
we’ll try to be as successful at racing as they are at run
ning an airline.”
