Ben Barone (left) presents Pied mont Chairman Bill McGee with a framed black and white print of Piedmont’s jets by artist Ken Hur ley. The second print of the two- print set presented to McGee depicts Piedmont’s prop aircraft. The prints, a limited edition of 2,500, are the result of a joint ef fort between Barone and Hurley to provide a historic print set of all of Piedmont’s aircraft, past and pres ent. Barone was one of the first stu dents to receive his commercial pilot’s training through Piedmont Aviation during the late-1940’s. He subsequently went into the Air Force and retired a colonel after 27 years of service. The 15x20 prints are numbered and individu ally signed by T.H. Davis, Piedmont’s founder, and Hurley, and are available at the Piedmont Gift Shoppes for $56.25 per set. Sterling Marlin holds 2nd place With one-third of the 1988 Winston Cup season behind him. Sterling Mar lin, driver of the Piedmont Airlines race team, has strengthened his grip on second place in the standings and turned in the most consistent performance of any team in the competition. Sterling’s sixth-place finish at legendary Iklladega on May 1 was his sev enth top ten finish in nine Winston Cup races this season. Dale Earnhardt is the only other driver with seven top ten finishes. Sterling s four finishes in the top five is exceeded only by former Piedmont driver Terry Labonte, with five. The strong Iklladega performance shaved the difference between Sterling and season points leader Dale Earnhardt to 60 points and increased Sterling s lead over third place Bill Elliott to 47 points. Piedmont’s Number 44 Oldsmobile has run consistently with the strongest teams on the circuit and has been on the lead lap at the finish of most races. Much of the credit goes to the close relationship that has developed between Marlin and new crew chief Jake Elder, who took over the team near the end of the 1987 season. The Winston Cup circuit moves on to Charlotte for the World 600, to b^ broadcast live by ABC television on May 29, then to Dover, Delaware, on June 5, and Riverside, CA, June 12. Both the Dover and Riverside races will be car ried live on ESPN cable TV. i i i~, -J- I n Kn May 1988 • Piedmonitor ^ service awards years Sullivan, Don, Jr. Sta. Supvr..
