Army Begins Greatest War Games Since 'lB 35,000 Troops Take Part in Maneuvers The largest peacetime concentra tion of troops in the United States was held recently at Pine Camp, N. T. More than 35,000 men took part in the games. Military attaches from Germany, Great Britain, Ja pan, China, Spain, France and Cuba were present to watch maneuvers. The peaceful countryside took on all the characteristics of a country side arrayed for war. Farmhouses were taken over to quarter officers, Bchoolhouses were made corps head quarters, and entire fields were lined with guns. Early, shown here, of New Haven, the credit given to Sergt. Aivin C. York of Pail Mall, Tenn., for annihilating a German machine-gun battalion, the Connec ticut department of the American Legion adopted a resolution calling on congress to award the Congres sional Medal to the Connecticut vet eran. Sergeant Early is totally dis abled due to war Injuries. The resolution asserted that the capture of the Germans in the Argonne for est was effected by Early and that he turned them over to Sergeant York, then his corporal, to take back to the lines. Thousand* of Spies Probably more than 100,000 spies are at work in the world today. More than 40,000 have been caught and convicted in Europe during the past 15 years. In Russia alone, dur ing this long period, spies have been arrested and found guilty on an average of one every six hours.— Callier's Weekly. Life Begins Again at 80 for Him James M. Left penniless by the depression, he invented a new kind of candy, and is back at the head of a million dollar concern. a H Mr*# sk 111-Starred Craft Shown After Plunge Post-Rogers Crash May Cause Russia to Postpone Hop The wreckage of the plane In which Will Rogers and Wiley Post crashed to death In the shallow wa ters of a river lagoon a few hundred yards from the Arctic ocean and 15 miles from Point Barrow, Alaska. Post's body was extricated from the splintered wreckage which appears under the forepart of the plane. Rogers' body was found outside the fuselage. Since the tragedy became known. It has been rumored that plans of three Russian aviators to hop from Moscow across the Arctic to San Francisco may remain In abeyance. The Post-Rogers flight was expect ed to make the preliminary survey. Prince Ready for Conflict With Italy Prince Makonnen, son of Halle Selassie, emperor of Ethiopia, is being trained for a part in the ex pected war with Italy. Although he Is still at the age when most lads are concerned only with games and studies, he is preparing for the con flict which many believe inevitable. He Is shown at the left wearing an officer's costume and his helmet is trimmed with the mane of a lion. Such sights as this inspire the na tive warriors to fight to the death. He may have a real Job on his hands, for there have been fears of a world-wide race war.
