Australia Gets New Governor Brig. Gen. Sir Alexander Hore- Ruthven, an Englishman, is to sue- sf>; f ' ceed Sir Isaac Alfred as governor general of the commonwealth of Australia. The appointment was made by King George on the recom mendation of Joseph Lyons, prime minister of Australia. Howard Hughes Tests New Pursuit Plane Surprising n huge crowd of pilots nnd airplnne manufacturers, Howard Iluglies, wealthy sportsman and film producer, permitted his new mystery racing ship to be photographed at Municipal airport, Los Angeles. The low-wing monoplane, powered by a 14-cyllnder twin row Wasp engine, has an expected top speed of 303 miles per hour with a cruising speed of 350 miles per hour. Built over a period of two years, the plane is estimated to have cost more than $lOO,OOO. It is equipped with retractable landing gear and a tail skid, aud has wing flaps and air brakes. Going Down? Star of Finland Led the Parade As part of the annual Harbor day celebration at San Francisco the last of the old square rigged vessels on the bay, the Star of Finland, was sdecked out in flags and bunting and towed by a tug at the head of the gigantic marine parade. The Star of Finland is the old sailer which it is planned to buy and anchor at the waterfront for use as an old time sen museum. Here the square rigger is passing under the catwalks of tin San Francisco-Oakland bay bridge. The sight of a square-rigger is 011 c that may be passing entirely from our ken before long. They were get ting in readiness for champion farm girl contests at the Los Angeles County fair in Pomona. It was an international affair with elimination events staged for Mexican, Portuguese, Italian, Swiss, Danish and Swedish girls. "Ears of the Army" at Work Is |Hhh^9 The United States army's huge "ears," sound locators tuned to pick up noises which might come from "enemy" aircraft or Infantry, as seen in the war maneuvers at Camp Pine, N. Y. These locators are syn chronized with the huge searchlights and once a sound is picked up the lights reveal the cause of the disturbance. Winant Heads New Social Security Board President Roosevelt appointed as chairman of the social security 've^a ooard John G. Winant, former Re publican governor of New Hamp shire. Alleged Polygamist Colony in Arizona r~~ | Down in Arizona a colony of alleged polygamists has been discovered at the village of Short Creek, which is shown in the Illustration. Army Tank Mothers Brood of Bayonets Dashing out from the protective but speedy hulk of this modern tank, soldiers of the Sixteenth Infantry, from Governor's Island, are pinioning their Invisible enemies to the ground with bayonets during the tank drill at the Camp Pine maneuvers at New York. These soldiers were the win ners of the drill. The whole nation, indeed the whole world, had been watching with interest the army maneuvers at Camp Pine. The boys have been "fight ing" among themselves In sham battles that are showing just where the strength and weaknesses of Uncle Sam's fighting force lie. FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 13, 1935 Name Wendel to Fight for AAA The newly organized League for Economic Equity, with headquarters at Sioux City, lowa, which hopes to , V / I raise $lOO,OOO among farmers in the Middle West to carry on a court fight for the AAA, has elected as their head Alvin S. Wendel, promi nent Woodbury county (Iowa) farm er. The league is fighting to retain benefits for farmers under pro visions of AAA. The battle between the two was terrific, Mayo swinging the demon around his head and against the rock of Trinity with such force that the three great gashes In the moun tain resulted from the contacts, so the tradition continues. Finally Mayo was victorious, crushing out the life of the demon and thus re storing peace and quiet to the beau tiful waters of the Saguenay.
